I spent 2 hours in the hot sun this morning and found exactly one coin! But that coin was a winner! Not 100% sure, but I think I found a 1722 Rosa Americana penny! The amazing thing is that it was only 4 inches down and on a field I've detected at least 20 times. It was in an area full of iron, so that's probably why I've missed it up until today.

Haven't cleaned it much, but it's definitely King George on the front. Let me know what you think about the back. I'm pretty sure I see a rose and "Rosa Americana" along the top of the reverse. It's thicker than a half penny, so it should be a penny denomination.

Here's a few pics:

I would be beside myself if I dug a US large cent but yours is super old! Congrats on such a great find.

Unreal piece of history. I can't even imagine digging coins of that age. Congrats!

Tim -- how great! And lots of detail left. Congrats. ~Lisa & John

That's a really tough find. Nice job Tim. One I haven't gotten over despite several Woods Hibernias and a handful of KG1s

Thanks! This coin must be a toughie to dig if you haven't found one yet!

That is one fantastic piece of history! Its amazing to think that coins like yours are still out there for the finding. Congratulations!!!

Thanks! What's really amazing is that I found it on public land at an old baseball field! There are no cellar holes or stone walls near this field. But I knew it was a good spot because I had found flat buttons and a few musket balls there in the past. Always look for the signs...

wah, wah, wah, NOW I WANT ONE OF THOSE, OK, cryin' over now---- <<<<<<AWESOME>>>>> . bet y'all holding it right now :notworthy: :icon_thumleft::icon_thumright:

Major League Recovery mate. Big Time Congrats on a rare old bird. :headbang::hello2::occasion18:

Thanks again, guys! Didn't realize this was such a cool find!

What is that pottery bowl thing, if you dont mind me asking.

It's a Dutch delftware plate dating to the 1580-1640 period. It was dug from a very early trash pit here in southeast Virginia, and the 20+ fragments I recovered allowed an almost total reconstruction.

That is one sweet find- sucks living where we do, doesn't it?? Congrats FreeBird!

Congrats on the copper, a coin that very few will strike off the want list.

Thanks! Yup, you never know what's going to come out of the ground here in New England! It rang up in the low 70's, so I was thinking zincoln Lincoln cent. I dug it anyway and it paid off. When in doubt, dig it out! HH.

Werry Nice find are you going To clean it any more or keep it like this ?:occasion14:

Congrats on making it well into the 18th century. There's plenty more to be found in New England as long as you pay your dues - research, swing, dig - repeat.

I think I'll leave it alone. Don't think it will get much better with hydrogen peroxide or scraping it with a toothpick.
