Hello everyone,

Had a good days hunt today. I was backroad driving and came across an outhouse in the middle of a field. I had to investigate that one right away. I knocked on a few local doors and buttoned down permission to begin the hunt. I noticed a lot of glass shards scattered all over. I ended up digging my oldest coin ever this afternoon. An 1817 Large cent. I was excited to see that. A large cent has always been on my wish list and now I can cross that one off. ;D I still cant believe it. I followed it up with a silver thimble, (which I dropped back in the field by accident :-\ ) an 1859 Canadian Large Cent and what I believe is an old iron shackle. It has two holes on each end and one in the middle that I suspect may have been where the chain went. I'M not sure though. Can anyone confirm?

Thats a nice large cent you found :headbang:, the other item is a cap from a connecting rod from some type of engine

At least you know the field still contains some silver. :D
Nice hunt...I'd love to find that coin~

sweet lc's :icon_thumleft: MR TUFF

Great stuff! Now get back out there and find that silver thimble!

Coupla nice old greenies :hello2:
twice I've thrown coins back into the mud when shaking them off :tongue3:
It's great when you can re-recover them.
let's see that thimble soon

congrats on your first LC. Looks like it has good detail. Thimbles are high on my wish list, can I go look for it? lol

now your starting to get into some oldies... :icon_thumright:

Very nice. My first LC was also an 1847. Looks like that site has good potential. Hope you find that silver thimble...again. I still haven't found a silver one yet.

Congrats on your oldest find! I love the large cents. jgas

Hi everyone,

Yep definitely 1847. Its crazy how a photo will pull out details that your eyes miss. Also thanks for the ID on that auto part......shackle thing. lol :laughing7: I went back to the field today and was shut down. It was freshly plowed. Cant wait for spring! ;D I stay out of fields in the fall time because you never know when you will encounter hunters. Its just not worth the risk of an accident. Hopefully the thimble survived the plow again.

Yup.
I'd agree that your 'shackle' is most likely a bearing cap.
Could be for an older stationary engine.
...always fun stuff to find!
There will be more!
