My oldest, and most awesome CRH'ing find. ***MORE PICS ADDED***whatsit? &foreign

So, I got a bag today, of halves of course... Not much silver just a few 40%ers. , but I did find my oldest coin to date... It isnt silver, and its only a penny, but I think it is cooler than most silver halves you are gonna find. It is a large cent. Unfortunately, it is pretty beat up so I havent been able to figure out what date it is yet... I am close, and I just need to find my loupe and spend a minute to try to figure it out. It is one of the ones that has a line underneath cent, on the back... So I believe that means it is 1837 or older.... I will do some more searching, and try to post decent pictures...
There is also a whatsit.... I have no idea where to even begin, so maybe I will post of pic of it too... see if anyone here knows a direction to point me in maybe.

Thanks. Chris.

If anybody has any suggestions on how to determine the date, or if there is a way, that would be amazing.. I think I can recall hearing about a way to do restore the date possibly without ruining the coin? Is that possible, or just wishful thinking?

Re: My oldest, and most awesome find in my short CRH'ing life...

Was it the size of a half dollar? If so it's probably a British penny.

The size is just larger than a quarter, just smaller than a half dollar.

It is not a brit... I have a redbook, and even though the coin is pretty beat up, the back of the coin is very legible (where it says United States of America). The front is too, exept for the date, it is the one that has liberty in the crown, or hairband and liberty is legible... The only thing I cant make out is the date.

I will post pics later today, this is a great find for me, I have never had a large cent before.

Captainfwiffo is the date restoring master, he could probably advise you on how to do it without hurting the coin.

The late 1830's is about right, but it's pretty busted, BUT a SWEET~~find. 1837-1842 seems about right..

Nice good luck charm...keep it with you always

My oldest find is an unreadable-date "V" nickel. This find is a lot older and cooler. Nice find! :laughing7:

Post a pic of the whatsit please. I'd be willing to bet that someone here could ID it. GMan could probably tell us what it is just by a description of what the thing smells like. That dude is uncanny when it comes to coin identification.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

I will, but I dont think its a coin... six months ago, I would have just tossed it, but after learning some of the amazing things i have learned from this website, I am not tossing anything anymore, until I know it is not anything special. This is kind of like convex shape, it is rather thick. and has some symbols on it, but nothing I can translate. the back is just plain, like a texture, but no design or anything. I am sure it is garbage but if someone here could help me identify it, that would be awesome. I am also going to include a picture of the foreigns I have found in the last couple weeks. One of them is Silver. (the one next to the old large cent)

I don't know how to restore dates on large cents (only nickels), but an expert might be able to pick out identifying details.

About the above bronze funny thing,

It looks like a talisman. Most of the symbols I see are Egyptian, -Eagles head, Ankh, a feather.

It's more research.

I didnt know what a talisman was, so I looked at some pics of some. The thing that is different about the thingy I found, is that it doesnt have any sort of clasp, or any indication at all of ever being anything other then just its stand-alone self. I dont see how it has ever been attached to anything, or part of anything different than just what you see in the pic. It is interesting, and I would love to at least figure out what it is, or where it came from.
