This is pretty exciting for me because it's my 1st ever 1943 steel war penny.

I was detecting along a sandy river bank yesterday with not too much luck,i found 12 clad pennies that took me and hour of searching(nothing special),and lots of junque. So i started heading to my car and kept thinking to myself maybe if I went out to the end of that sandy little peninsula that I brushed off there could be something there,I turned around and made my way to the edge of the sandy out cropping swung about 3 minutes then got a hit,I then started to dig and 3 inches in I found this(yes it's not the rare copper coated war penny but still a real nice find worthy of a post)it really made my day.

Thanks for looking
stay safe & HH

I'm guessing it's a very recent drop, as steel/zinc pennies dropped 60 years ago would be chunks of rust by now.

Out of curiosity, what did it VDI at? I always figured they would be discriminated out.

(edit) Sorry, I forgot to congratulate you on a great find. A new drop that's in great condition is 10x better than a rusty disc. I have yet to find one myself.

Here's mine, found it with the RS 3300 and didn't know till I cleaned the coins. I thought it was a washer till I saw the profile. I almost threw it away. Now it's in my penny book in the '43 slot. ;D ;D BTW it rings in like a regular penny on the 3300 ,just threw it on the ground and the M6 reads it all over the place and doesn't really lock on it. ???....HH.. 8)

beautiful coin ! and anything you find is worthy of a post , this site is for posting what you find, not waiting till you think something is worthy of posting before you post it in my opinion. i like to see what everyone post even if its some clad and pulltabs, of course i love to see people find and post old coins and artifacts but i'm an all around guy and most the time i just find some clad but i still like to see the old coins and other stuff that is found also so post what you find no matter what you think the value of it is, also like to see that other people find pulltabs screwcaps and clad just like i do , congrats to you and goodluck on your next hunt ;)

nice find.....my dad has 2 or 3 of them in a box somewhere
i think they stick to magnets, dont they?

I'll be happy to send you a 43 that hasn't been in the ground, unless your penny book is exclusively dug coins.

That was lost recently. I found one but only because it was next to a silver quarter, it was quite a surprise. Great find...Ryan

That thing must have been on top of the ground, because it would have rusted if it was in the ground for any amount of time.  Nice find  :)

Thanks for the kind offer Halfdime ;D, but I have a couple of nondug '43's around here somewhere.. Give it to one of the kids..It might be worth something in a hundred years. :D

It actually registered in the iron range at first, then i swep a bit more and it then rang as a dime.It is magnetic and i found it at 3 inches give or take,as some of you said it must have been a recent drop(I also believe that too)there is not a single scratch on it,from my research the rarer 43' war pennies were mistakenly covered in zinc,or copper i cant remember,so keep your eyes open and test your non steel looking 43's with a magnet

Great shapefor a steelie.

I'd re----- search that spot.

It was definately a recent drop.
& it may be a part of someones
coin collection.
They may have dropped more.

& I'm guessing the signal you got was from another
object maybe Copper or silver slightly
deeper or off to the side.

how close did you re-check the spot after ?
Or did you ?

Of course I believe they were originally Zinc Coated steel
being in such great shape, you may have gotten
the signal from the Zinc.

Nice condition!!! steel pennies can become unsightly. Now just find a cooper one with same date and it is on.

Congratulations that one looks like it's in great condition. I haven't found one detecting but have found 7 in change. None of the ones I found in change had near as good detail as your's does.
