I got out Sunday and hit a spot in Washington County, PA that has been giving up a few colonial relics and coins. Previously it has given up a KG III Hibernia, a Spanish coin button, and a few tombacs, a shoe buckle chape, and a thimble. I wasn’t expecting to find much and I didn’t. After an hour I only had an open ended thimble and a small silver plated button. Then I dug my second horse shoe and started carrying it around for good luck. Right after that I got a sweet signal on the Deus reading a steady 89. I opened up a plug and the signal was still in the hole. I pulled some dirt out and the signal was now in the dirt pile. I saw silver peeking out of a clump of dirt and immediately knew what I had. A Spanish cob!!!

Only my second one ever. My first one was found 23 years ago. These things are rare as hens teeth in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Here are my finds for the day. After the cob things were pretty quiet. I got a King George III later and then called it a day.

EDIT: Just got the following Information on the Cobs Forum from Mackaydon:
Lima 2R; assayer's initial "M" (most likely Cristobal Melgarejo). Date appears as '72'; i.e. between 1720 and 1727--during "M's" time.

Steve, I am certainly no expert, but I do know that cobs were still being minted well into the 1700s. I also know that they were popular with Virginians, and Southwestern PA was crawling with Virginians during and after the French & Indian war. This is probably why I find cut silver and cobs, whereas they are rare in eastern PA.

Steve and Steve, check this site out Spanish Colonial Coin Information, Spanish Coin Identification Guide In my quest (dream) to dig a cob one day.... a while ago, I asked myself "how old" as well. They call this New World cob type a "pillars and waves" and it was minted from 1651 to 1773. This would have been minted along side the first New World milled reales with the globes and columns. (Another Spanish silver type I dream of digging one day!). As far as what circulated and where... that's a whole other challenge. Sure does seem like some areas contain more cobs and pistareens and others have more coppers.

That's fantastic! Most of the cobs you see on T-Net are 1R & 1/2R, but you got a 2R. Good for you! Great for you!

Banner vote for a very nice 2R cob going in.
And I'm busy getting ready for a 2 day dig on coastal areas, wish me luck Steve.

VOTED.

PS, seems most like their deus's very much, ESP, in thick target areas, you've had your awhile, what's your first impression compared to your F75 ? Me, and others I'm sure are eager to hear...from someone like you, a reliable source who owns both.

Check back in when I get back.

I'm voting banner too, that cob is just ridiculously good. I can only dream!

I can't compare the Deus to the F75 as I've never used the F75. However I have used a few other machines, and the Deus is by far my favourite. It's (in my opinion) really crazy for pulling deep coins amongst iron. I'm just starting my second season with the Deus, and some days I smile to myself thinking "oh yeah, I am so in sync with this Deus, I really have this baby figured out". Some days I want to smash it in a fit of rage like Jimi Hendrix' flaming Fender Strat. Guess I am still learning haha

Great looking coin. Mackaydon knows his silver! I doubt I will ever dig one here in this area of Tn. But one can dream. Congrats on number "2"!

Nice! It's an early 18th century 2 Real COB from Lima! Looks like 1720's!
Golden Age of Piracy! :treasurechest::2barsgold::3barsgold::icon_pirat:-Yarr!!

Thanks for the Banner vote and comments. I thought that was the Who that was known for smashing guitars?

Yes Pete Townshend smashed his fair share of guitars...but Jimi set his on fire before he smashed his. [emoji450][emoji91]

Being an avid southwest PA hunter myself, I have got to say that I am amazed by this coin. If this had come from a coastal settlement area I would think it was interesting and cool, but this one made it into "the wild west of colonial times" as I like to call it. Great find and voting banner!

WTG man! Thats what I am talking about...beautiful spanish silver!

Oh thats a beauty! And all the more special coming from Pa!! Congrats to you Steve on the killer find!

Great recovery. I have been suffering from trout fever and have not gotten out in a long while. Might have to take a day off of fly fishing and get back to dirt fishing. You sir have inspired me.

Thank you Mr. Blaze for the comments and the Banner Vote. They are definitely a rare find in my neck of the woods and it seems the 2 reale is a tough one to find even is SE Virginia.

Congrats!! Excellent silver find!!

The Deus must really like you!
