Spent the day with RonC and Rich asking permission at a number of older rental homes in south Eugene. Most folks gave us a chance to search their lawns. Ron got some great silver dimes and a spoon that I hope he will show everyone. Rich had a number of good finds as well. I was getting tired and seriously thought about calling it a day, but Ron's "silver sense" directed us down one more street. I selected a house for no particular reason and boldly marched up to a porch and knocked on the front door. The lady answered and very kindly said "sure, and thanks for asking."

The front lawn was rather small but cut fairly short, and right away I knew there was something different about this lawn, because I think that just about every other coin I was locating was a clad quarter! Where all the quarters were coming from, I'm not sure, but I was getting used to the high tones being quarters when along came another one, only about 3 inches down. I dug my plug, and waved it in front of the detector, which gave a sweet sound. Just about at that time, I saw the silver reeded edge and thought, "YESSS!!!! A silver quarter!! As I dislodged the coin from the plug, it kept getting bigger and bigger, and I'll bet my eyes were getting bigger and bigger as well!

So, there it was, my very first silver half, and a walker! It's a 1945-D. What a great feeling!

Thanks to Ron for taking the photo. I hope it posts OK!

Congrats on that milestone! Those Walkers are real pretty, especially when they're staring at you from the dirt!

Mike, Mine has an "S" mintmark. What about yours?

Mine's a D. How'd that San Francisco coin get clear over there? You're so close to Philly, I would have bet yours would be a "plain."

Mike

Dug a few o these over the years and I can't help but marvel at such a massive slab of silver in the plug...like wouldn't you notice this MASSIVE thing falling out of your pocket? Truely, one of the most beautifull silver coins of all time and amazing to find one! You may find older coins, more rare coins...but almost nothing can compare to a walker in the plug ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't find many older coins pre WWII with mintmarks. This is one of the oldest.
