My First Silver Coin and It's a Merc!

I went back to the old park that I know is going to be productive once I get through all the bottle caps and pull tabs. It's been a party place for ages. I had gone to a sight that had a bunch of old beer cans, but couldn't find anything (I think it is where they tossed their cans from above the sight). So I went pack up to the parking area. This used to be the place to "Park" back in the day from what I've been told by my dad. I've included a couple of pictures. Anyway, I noticed what looked like worn out tire ruts in the grass, so I started to hunt along those. Within a minute, I hit it, a 1941 Merc, not sure of mint mark, as they seem to all look the same. I was so siked. I knew it was special when I saw how bright it was coming out of the ground. It was only 1 inch down. Within a foot, I also picked up a 1941D Wheat, and a 1945S Wheat. Sorry, no picture on the wheat (I need to retake the photograph). There are picinic grounds all over this area, so I have a lot of places to continue my quest.

Excellent find. Where there's one there are more waiting to be uncovered. Have you done any research (from a historical perspective) on this particular dig site?

Neal, congratulations on an excellent coin. Mercs are always fun to find. I'm sure you will find more. Sounds like you got a good place to hunt. :) Like the pics. Good luck and keep us posted.

Way to go on your first silver!

You have a great looking place there. Get into the overgrown areas and work slow, the older stuff is there. I have gone back over the same areas several times, and keep coming up with stuff.

Good luck!.............HH

From an historical perspective, a fur trader by the name of Jean Pierre Cabanne established a trading post in the area of this park in the early 1800's to help supply Ft Atkinson which is about 2 miles north of the park. The city description of the park indicates the post has never been identified. Driving along the main road that borders the park, there is what appears to be the foundation of a building, but oddly, no "Historical Marker" is in the area. I'm going there tomorrow, and will double check. If now sign, I may be hunting that area.
