Just remember it is like fishing - ground fishing. You don't really know what is biting your line. Ever tail hook a small fish? You think you have a monster not a minnow. You have to set the hook when the bobber goes down. Right?
Metal detecting is a lot like gambling the slot machines. Ever been in a Casino with slots. Did you notice that they still go "Ding, Ding, Ding,. . . " when they pay out even though there are no coins coming out? Know why? People are "hooked" on hearing the "Ding." No "Ding" and people won't gamble as much. We are addicted to the "Beep." I don't care who you are or how long you have detected, you live for the "Beep."
So for your first finds, you did find rings. They are just aluminum. You are just finding them a century or so too late. At one time in the late 1800's, aluminum was the most expensive metal we had. Worth 5 times the price of gold. So special and rare that the very top of the pyramid on the Washington Monument is a 100g piece of Aluminum - the largest piece every cast at that time, the most expensive. So if you were detecting during that time (use your imagination), the rings you found would be worth 5 times gold ones and you would be doing the REALLY happy dance.
So once you get used to your machine, you'll find out there is a lot more stuff out there. Your finds will greatly increase. Just like mine did.
