My first metal detecting hunt

Went on my first hunt today and it was cut short because we had to make an emergency trip to Texas, but I managed to find several coins, a rusty old knife, and a wallet with a metal tag (land owner knows the family of who the wallet belongs to, his decades old drivers license was in it, so he is returning it to them).

I got them cleaned up the best I can while on this unexpected road trip. It was so much fun and thank you to all that gave me advice and encouragement! I canā€™t wait to do it again.

I appreciate everyoneā€™s nice comments on this hunt but Iā€™m sad to say most of it was not even real. I was told today the landowner planted several of the pieces on the trail he knew Iā€™d take because he didnā€™t want me to walk away empty handed and get discouraged. My father knew Iā€™d want to know and after giving him an earful I believe he is as shocked as I am to learn this today.

It explains the two dollar coins in the ziplock that just happened to be an indigenous woman (he lost the bag before he planted them). I guess he thought in my ignorant bliss Iā€™d think that was really cool. Itā€™s all insulting but especially that.

The good news if there is any is I did legitimately find the wallet we returned, the banged up quarter, the nickel, and the knife. The others including the walker were deliberately placed.

Sorry all. šŸ˜¢
Well its nice to see honesty. In this crap bucket world today that's a treasure worth having. šŸ‘

That doesnā€™t change the fact that you found them. You didnā€™t know they were there, so you still had to have the ear and the intuition to dig them up. No different than recent drops ā€” your finding them was legit, IMO.

No need to apologize for something you were not party to. NOW, get out there and find some silver and gold!:hello2::headbang:
Thank you, I do intend to do that and hope I have my own detector by the end of the year.

Thanks! I started to keep my mouth shut because it had been a while, but everyone was so nice it just didnā€™t seem right to let it stand. Especially that walker. Maybe Iā€™ll hide it somewhere and do a little treasure hunt of my own and see who finds it.

Good point, thank you. Iā€™ve cooled down a little now so I guess Iā€™ll cancel the voodoo doll I ordered. Maybe. šŸ¤”

I agree with @robertk, you found them without knowing anything was there, doesn't matter that someone "salted" some of your finds there, so you did what you need to keep doing, you will do great!!!

Oh my, well as the others have said, you still were able to find them not knowing they were there. Weather really went south in my area for the last week and a half, but got nice enough to get out yesterday for a short while with a new detector. Managed one 2005 quarter and what I thought was a gold bracelet that turned out to be a gold covering over a different metal yet to be determined. Was still fun to get back out and swing the new detector......

Well, I will admit I've salted a few things when I've had some of the younger kids out showing them how to detect. It kinda peaks their interest and they legitimately find them, and a few times other things I didn't put there. Those clubs will sometimes have hunts where they've purposely salted the area, so really no different than that. Besides, you got some good practice in.

Well u still put in the time and effort. U did find them technically.. had to use the skills u learned with the machine u used. Still had the thrill of hearing and digging up the targets. Same we all get. Heck everything is seeded. Just not all was intentionalā€¦ kinda like the bag he dropped
