The mythological Goddess Liberty looks pretty worn out and she has a dirty face on this 1917 Merc; but I think she's just beautiful. I found her today hiding on the corner of a building in an old park on Owasco Lake that has been hit pretty hard by detectors over the years. I've been hunting here off and on lately and was pretty sure I'd find a silver coin here sooner or later. Today was the day!! ;D

Good job! My first Merc was a 1917 as well. I'll always remember that one.

Congrats on this great coin!

My man, (hush-hush...) ahem... that's the roman god Mercurius (therefore "Merc"), aka Hermes in the Greek mythology, not "lady Liberty" on that coin...

Hope you will soon add some company to this lonely one...

Actually Yaxthri, we're both wrong. After checking Wikipedia, I see she is a representation of the mythological Goddess Liberty and not our American Lady Liberty as I thought or Mercurius as you thought. I guess we can all still learn something everyday. ;D

Nice job! There is no hiding the fact that finding old silver is like finding a needle in a haystack UNLESS you get on virgin grounds.
You did well looking where noone else did.
Keep it up!
Too bad our weather is going to turn soon.
I hate to give it up! :(

Oh so sweet!! :icon_thumleft: I got my first merc this year, too! Happy hunting!

Sweet find!

All the best,

Lanny

Certainly seems like we can. Thanks fo the info.
Now why are these coins called "Mercs"?

It's because lot of people mistake the goddess Liberty for the Roman messenger god Mercury. She just got stuck with the nickname Merc. You can read all about it by searching...Wikipedia Mercury Dime. This can lead you to all the old coins, their history, rarity and their collectable values; such as the 1894-S Barber dime for instance...check it out. It's worth a fortune! :read2: :coffee2:

Congrats on a great First :hello2:
I remember learning that the bust was a Liberty symbol rather than a Mercury,
I recently dug a 1916 in great shape,
then a 17 with the D I needed on the 16 :'(
Keep those finds comin'

Congrats on the first... Still waiting for my first merc as well. Hopefully soon :icon_thumright:
