I posted this over on the "what is it" forum but I figured now that I know what it is, I would post it here too. I found this in my back yard of all places. Two days of playing around with my first ever metal detector and I am thrilled! I'm hooked!

Nice find Diva. One of my first best finds was in the back yard too. I wish I could search all the back yards in this town. There is probably something good in each one.

Very nice find DD and welcome to this great hobby.....Hope to see more post in the future.Congrat's and HH!!

I'm willing to bet it is gold. Even without a hallmark, if it were gold plated, or some other base metal, the finish would be corroeded, or worn off in spots. It's definetly a keeper either way. Great find! HH!

Beautiful find DD!

And welcome to the forum!

Nana ;)

Welcome to Tnet, Ddiva. That's a really great find. :) How deep was it?

You'll be surprised at what your "cheap" detector will find. There has been some incredible finds on here with low priced detectors. Good luck!

It was about 6" down. It's amazing what I have found within 6" of that brooch too. I kept getting hits all around it even after I found that. I suffer from a chronic pain disorder so I can only do so much at a time. I would love nothing more than to get in there and dig the heck out of the whole area. Today I found 19 cents within inches of where the brooch was. It's all clad and the odd thing is that the dates of all the coins range from 1965 to 1990. So what is a 1990 dime doing buried with a mourning brooch possibly dating back to the 1920's or even as old as the late 1800's??

I love the mystery of history!
