Nice scroll work on this one. Made from an 1888 Canadian five cent silver. My first fish scale.:headbang: I seem to be doing well with the Canadian silver this year. Wonder if the blemish on the back is where they tried to attach it to something?

Sword hanger 060524.jpg

Another great find tonight was this civil war era sword hanger.

Then a rough IHP and a clean wheatback to boot.

Congrats on the Love Token.
Way better than just a fish scale.

That's something special. Awhile ago this coin shop I'd go to had a few love tokens for sale. Some had old locomotives and early brass era automobiles beautifully engraved on them. There were gold coin ones and silver ones all made from US coins of the very late 19th and early 20th century

that silver is really cool, great finds all around. thanks for posting

Sweet love token! Maybe back was silver soldered to a pin? Would explain the blemish. Never dug a 5 cent from Canadia in silver. A 10 cent yes from 1870.

Love tokens are really cool finds. Congratulations

Don't love tokens usually have two people's name or initials on them?

I'm struck by the difference in conditions of the pennies, only 3 years apart.

Did the metallurgy change between IHPs & Lincolns?

It depends on the year. The early Indians were 88% copper and 12% nickel. starting partially in 1864 they went to 95% copper and a 5% tin and zinc (although they don't seem to say the percentage of each). The Lincoln cents are supposed to have the same mix up to 1943 when copper was needed for the war and they instead made cents of steel with a thin coat of zinc over it. In 1944 they recycled ammo shell casings and used them through 1946. Those were 95% copper and 5% zinc....no tin. In 1947 they went back to the 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. There again, no mention as to the percentage of tin and zinc mix. I was always curious about that too since wheats and later Indians read different, and different still than memorial cents.
