I just got my metal detector at the first of the month and have had very little time to figure out how it works. Today I bought a metal detecting permit from parks and wildlife , and headed to a local park. I was digging up pop can tabs and wires for about two hours, then four inches down i found this. Could use a little assistance identifying once i get better pictures. Civil war era?

Looks to me like a .54 cal dish based Burnside rifle ball.

I thought that at first but based on it's size compared to the fingers it looked to small for a .54.
That is why I asked about a measurement.

Congrats, nice "first find".....

Metal Detecting Permit? Did you say METAL DETECTING PERMIT?? Where do you live that this is required? Oh and congratulations on the find! Very Nice.

That's a cool find you got there.
You gotta hit that spot again.
Congrats on the first dirt fishin' trip.

Keep swingin',

From your picture of the bullet in compaison with the dime. I only get a measurment of 40-41 caliber. At first I though it might be a henry repeater, but that is a 44 caliber still seems a little big. The only rifle I can find that fired a smaller caliber conical bullet is the colt 1855 precussion repeater. The War Dept purchased only 4,712 weapons -- a relatively small number. Maybe a rarer find than you think. http://members.tripod.com/~ProlificPains/wpns.htm

Since Bdub hasn't responded, I see from his profile he is from the Kansas City (KC) area. In Johnson County, Kansas (South West Corner of KC) you need a $15 permit to MD in the county parks, and trust me I get stopped a couple times each time I am in a county park and asked for my permit. I pay for my permit every year just in case I want to hunt there but for the most part I have decided its too much trouble so I usually stay away from the county parks. I hope Bdub wasn't in one of the many county parks that are off limits to detecting, maybe thats why he hasn't posted since posting this first find, he might be in jail. ???
