Hunting in February in this part of Canada is usually unheard of. This year is really no exception. There is a couple feet of snow on the ground where it isn't drifting and several more feet where it is drifting. Even if there was open space the ground is frozen solid. We usually get a thaw in January or February but that hasn't happened so I decided to try along the shoreline. I walked a stretch of shoreline that saw heavy military activity all through the late 1600's up until the mid to late 1700's. This particular spot saw two major battles in the early 1700s so I went in with the hopes of a cannonball. Well, it's not a cannonball but it is the largest mortar fragment that I have found. I've found more fragments in this area in the fields but this one was below the high tide line.

For February, I am very happy to post this find! Quarter is for size reference.

Good way to break up the Winter. Just being out and having a shot is good, but getting to take something home in Feb... well you gotta like that. I would imagine it will be about May 1st before IH is back and we get going here.

Very nice frag and HUGE.......guesstimate on the weight?

Guesstimate not necessary...weighs exactly 27 pounds! Probably close to a 300 pound ball when whole.

300 pounds?! Cripes! Must have been the ball that Baron Von Munchhausen rode on.

Yeah, it was nice to be able to bring something home. I'm hoping to better that this weekend with a nice 6 pounder! The potential on this piece of shoreline is great for this type of find. My only problem is that the salty conditions wreak havoc with my machine...I can't get it to tune out the background...just something I have to live with and work around.

Just like I told someone on here you can't ground balance to salt. Actually I think was it was a dealer on the other forum we used to post at. The good news is since it's large iron you're looking for you don't really have to run it hot to get good depth in salt water.

Nice find Romeo :headbang: I knew I would eventually find where all you strays ended up

Welcome to the fray! Send me a PM with your CMD name...I'm curious!

I took some measurements of this fragment and it would have been a 12 inch ball. This "SpiderMan" ball is just over 12 inches! Imagine that coming at you loaded with powder and lead balls!

Jesus... I couldn't figured out what was different. :laughing7: A couple of changes and to me you don't even look like yourself!

About 7-8 years ago a guy in MA dug a 400 pounder.
