My first button, but don't know much else about it.

I try not to ever work on Sundays, but I've had one of those jobs hanging over my head for months now, and the conditions were finally right, so had to get at it come sun-up, and was dead beat when I got home late this afternoon, BUT it was so nice out that I had to do something worthwhile, right? I ended up over at the Methodist church, not a block from my yard. First I found an old toy revolver, then some foil, then a piece of copper tubing. Yawn. I worked my way over to the flower bed and got a good signal right at the edge. I pulled my plug out, scanned the hole and nothing. Checked the plug and not an inch deep this pops out. Not the silver I was expecting (hoping is more like it), but a button, with an eagle. Wow, and some writing on the back too. Now I got to ask, what kind, how old, keep it or tho' it back?

Oh, and it measures 1.137" in diameter (28.9 mm).

It's a U S Great Seal button and was first introduced in 1902. Your version was made between 1902 and 1910 when a rim was added to the edge of the button. It's definitely a keeper.

Thanks, man. Is it military issue or something else?

Miliatary button probably War Wold I. Nice save and great shape. I like seeing Horstmann on the back.

Thanks for the comments. There's a heap of knowledge on this forum and much appreciated.
