My first attempt

This is my first attempt on knapping a point. I really need to learn how to thin, I could'nt get much of a notch on the one side because of the thickness. And don't even ask what tools I was using on this because you would laugh your butt off Honestly I'm proud of it for a first attempt, my girlfriend saw it on the table and asked where I found it LOL.

Not bad at all. If you run out of good stone material to use you can always try glass, it flakes really easy and is of course free/abundant. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the compliments folks! Cannonman, using glass sounds like a great idea, I'm going to have to try that. I still have some flint cores that I might use for more practice, if anyone can give me pointers on thinning that would be great!

That looks MIGHTY fine for a first attempt! You will be an expert in no time at all! You might try youtube for some tips on thinning. I know they have quite a few vids on knapping there and one might give you just the idea you need. I can't wait to see more seeing as your first looks so nice!

Ok, I give in LOL. I used an actual hammerstone to rough the shape, then I used a spade bit just like the one in this pic to do the pressure flaking. I had to sharpen it quite often as the bit was alot softer than the flint.

Doug, for what it's worth - I've found that copper works really well especially for stone, glass or obsidian. I use electrical copper ground wire from Lowes. A foot of it will make several tools. Just drill a hole in a wooden handle, put in a little glue and set in a 3-4" section of copper with a quarter inch or so left exposed. Grind the cooper to the shape you desire...round, v-shaped or whatever you need. Or pound it on an anvil to flatted the point for the corner notches, etc. Unlike your drill bit, the copper will really grab the edge of your napping material.
