My first American military relic...tongue off a 2-piece belt/sash buckle

Well the snow melted and was a beautiful day to get out detecting with hunthicks and Hans R Dirty... managed to pull this tongue off a 2-piece belt/sash buckle - eagle holding an olive branch and arrows at the end of the day up on an older site. It's bigger than a regular button and smaller than a cross plate...it is concave with no back... Also found this possible 93 rd Label pin with the date of 1871 from the same Regiment I found the Shako plates a few weeks back... Also in the group picture is 2 militia buttons, vent circle, chain from the helmet, various coins from the 1800's, an ICR bale seal, musket ball and button..

The eagle seems a bit big for a button. It may be a bridal rosette Nice haul man I'll post mine later today. Sure was a busy hunt I feel like my back is fused Wait a minute, it is lol.....cheers

I think you may have nailed it...now that I think of it there was another piece that broke off from the edge...

was pretty sure that's what it is.. there was a similar one posted a couple weeks ago by KYShooter but his had stars around it but looked about the same

That's a pretty sweet find, and goes to show you never know what will show up! Different is always cool, something else to add to the display!

Just curious how thin it really is? Probably my bad, but I always associate thin as being like the brass skin of a plate, rosette, etc. If it is a piece to a buckle, wouldn't it be made of a heavier cast brass?

Yep its the center disc to a tongue and wreath.Its what we call the Rope Border Eagle.It pre dates the Civil War 1850-1855 or there abouts.I just dug my third one last week.There is presently two different types on Ebay

No its stamped brass,it is said they were only used on cloth or elastic belts which they were but I have seen period "rigs",with them on thin leather belts.They are also listed as Militia which is not entirely true either.....not that many Militia's where they are commonly found

His was a different variety....pretty cool to see a few of em popping up in places they normally dont
