Well, I am off to an interesting start, still learning the ins and outs of my new hobby. I didn't dig up Jimmy Hoffa or a fortune in gold coins, but I have found a few things and thought I would share the list with folks who can relate:

several nondescript hunks of iron
7 aluminum cans
6 nails (all modern)
5 pieces of wire
2 bottle caps
2 intact glass jars of Colgate Veto Cream Deodorant (1970 or so?) with metal lids
1 intact glass Coke bottle (1970?)
1 aluminum pull tab
1 clad quarter (1995)
1 farm doohickey that looks like a pulley

(and a partridge in a pear tree--sorry, I couldn't resist)

All-in-all it's nothing to write home about, but I am enjoying myself immensely! Thank you, Santa, for my new toy! And HH, everybody, in 2014!

Pull tabs are the bane of all diggers. If you're not finding them, you're missing out on silver and gold jewelry. Most of my silver rings came up as pull tabs, but I dug them anyway. Gotta dig all those pull tab signals.

Bottle caps come up as quarters on my detector, so I always dig them as well. Just don't spend your day at a park loaded with them! Find another spot if you're getting more bottle caps than quarters.

Whole aluminum cans are easy to ignore once you get the hang of it. I can usually tell how big a target is just by slowly running the coil over the spot. You'll figure it out with time and patience. But chewed up cans are another thing! I still dig those boys once in awhile. They can fool you very easily.

Iron nails should be easy to ignore. Even if your detector doesn't have a way to filter them out, you should be able to hear what they sound like and learn to ignore them.

It's a hobby where you have to pay your dues. I spend at least 15 hours a week detecting, when the weather cooperates. Good luck to you and don't give up!

It's gets better, when you learn that machine it will all come together ...

Nice start. Start researching old sites in your area then print it off in a presentable fashion and present it to the property owner. It shows you are interested in the history and it makes it more difficult for them to say no. Then go dig some old silver!

Sounds like a great start to the hobby. Gotta learn everything your detector is telling you, so you gotta dig everything for now. I'm looking forward to your first wheat or your first silver, or even better.

As time goes by your finds will get better.I still have the same finds like yours right now.HH.And this being my first few months at this i agree 100% that location means a lot.Good luck..

Dig everything up. Don't cherry pick. It's the only way to learn. The good stuff will come. This was my first year and I am already in the 1800, and 1700's club. 40 good coins so far. For Me good is silver or 100 years old or better

Sounds like my first 3 months. Keep going, the magic has yet to come.
