My first 2 Reales!

The warm weather after Christmas got me back out. I had been detecting around an old hand-dug well, using various coils & settings, and on my last pass found this 1774 2 Reales. That made my year! In the same 900 square foot area over a 2-day period I found 5 large cents (2 in one hole along with a Imperial Standard flat button), a possible padlock keyhole cover, part of a utensil handle, various nails, bricks, pottery sherds, etc.

Silvermonkey, yes indeed! Until now I never found 5 large cents on a site - let alone 2 in the same hole with a flat button. This is only the 2nd time that I detected a virgin site.

Gare, thanks & Happy New Year to you as well. With the rainy weather we've been having its given me a chance to look at some deed and tax records. While I still need to return to the property and do some more searching, I'm pretty sure that the second (large) home was built about 1833-34. Once complete, the family probably moved into that and used original dwelling for storage or another purpose.

ToddsPoint, thanks as that helps to clear up the mystery of why the coin was found at the original cabin site. While the family that lived on the property built a larger home in the 1830s about 600 feet away, it is possible they continued to use the cabin well into the mid/late 1800s.

Sometimes it is just really hard to figure out the why with finding some things as your silver.

Predates occupation.

Lost previously to building a cabin/home.
Just old coinage floating around in circulation for decades.

I got this worn 1R near a 1812 button and a few 1812-1820s coppers.
It was just floating around in circulation, because the area wasn't even granted/leased/broken yet.

These things make me think and it drives the passion.

pepperj, congrats on the 1R coin! Our situations sound similar. The explanation ToddsPoint said in an earlier post seems logical. About 1/2 of the coins and other artifacts I found at the site date to the 1830s or before. Plus, I know that because the owner was delinquent on taxes in 1831, he sold the property to another. Then between 1834 & 1835 the value of the land & buildings jumped 60% (compared to 20-25% for neighbors), suggesting that the larger frame home was built/occupied then. Again, repeat visits once the weather permits, may help.
