My first 2 cent coin.

Got out on saturday...It was raining but i stuck it out anyways...Not many targets but i did land my first 2 cent coin....1864 lg motto...It was crusty but i could see the 2 on the back.... it cleaned up great

As for cleaning coins it always depends on the coin+soil conditions

I did use peroxide on this coin...but i never heat it...i just soak them...And i use a face cloth to rub LIGHTLY petroleum jelly.

I found this nice injun yesterday didnt take before shot...thought it was a common one...after i cleaned it it was a 1864-L

I will also include last weekends coin spill pics before and after...They show the different results from the same method..I didnt bother cleaning the toasted colonial coin as it would not benifit...as you can see it depends on the coin for cleaning results...Thanks again.....Brian

Those last two before and after photos are enough to make any MDer's heart palpitate. That is one beautiful collection of old coins! Two questions: 1. How long do you typically soak the coins in the unheated peroxide? 2. Do you "flip" the coins while they are soaking in the peroxide? The top side always gets clean for me, but not the bottom. I flip them over (like you were cooking pancakes) to get to the reverse side that has been faced down. Thanks in advance. Steve

Terpfan ...I soak atleast 24-30 hours...I use a toothpick to put under the coin..

Terpfan: One easy way to do both sides is use a plastic picnic fork and set the coin upright between the tines. I've done a few like that and it gets both sides without flipping. It does the job. --DMN

Great looking coin, excellent cleanup. Thanks for the cleaning tips. I tried to clean up a toasted IH with only the 1893 date visible, used peroxide, but it wiped out everything. As you noted, sometimes it is best to leave it alone.
