My first 1800's Coin

Digging in a friends backyard yesterday evening that has given up many nice finds in the past. Hits are getting fewer and farther in between. I end up getting a 1952 Wheatie (not pictured) and just as the sun was going down I get a faint hit but repeatable reading 84/85 on my AT Pro. Also getting a bunch of junk hits around it and the numbers start jumping around. I put the shovel in the ground and immediately hit a thick root. Digging around the root a bit and there it is about 6 inches down is my first Indian Head Penny 1898, also making it my first 1800's coin. An air test later revealed a 66/67 reading. Maybe the wet root and some coal slag were throwing it off. Thanks for reading, HH. Brad

Nice job on the Indian head. Did you recheck the hole. That's a pretty high VDI for an indian head.

Rechecked the hole and nothing came up higher than my 40 iron disc setting. I've had a few things before come up higher than it should before and I think it had a lot to do with this highly mineralized Virginia soil. Plus there's slag everywhere in this yard. Never had this problem in any other state as of yet.

Congrats on dipping into the 19th century, BradVA. I, too, use 40 iron discrim on my AT Pro, especially in areas that I can return to. Then on return trips when the hits get fewer, I switch to no discrim b/c that gives increased depth over using 40 discrim. Of course, it means dealing with increased chatter, but for me it keeps a property open for potentially providing additional keepers. Good luck!

Thanks, I also hear zero mode is good. I've recently switched to STD mode on this particular property to get a more distinct tone on the deeper targets. Pulled a 1935 Wheatie at around 12 inches deep and I had been over that area several times before. I've only been MDing for about 6 months so I have a lot to learn but I'm already hooked.

Nice job on the Indian head! I'm still waiting to find one with my f2...

Nice score !

Congrats on your first 1800's coin. :hello2: I love digging the oldies and imagining who was the last person who held (and lost) it. Keep digging!

That's exactly what I think of when I find something old.
