I have hammered this former colonial home site for years. Plenty of flat buttons, some colonial buckles, a coin silver spoon, lots of 1800s coins and relics, but not a single 18th century coin... until now! :hello2: This beautiful 1781 Mexican Half Real was 6-8” down and seemed as tiny and thin as could be! :icon_thumright: I thought I had found a ‘Trime’ at first, only this turned out to be so much better!

Not to be outdone, a very nice 1851 Large Cent came out of hiding from beneath a tree root. After some soap and water, and very light tooth brushing, I kept in my hand and rubbed the natural oils from my hand into it. This seems to work very well on cents that are dry and somewhat pitted. Hot hydrogen peroxide would have ruined this one I think.
Thanks for looking! 6E54F3F4-81B8-4E76-B0C4-653E91F85896.jpegE328BAE1-089C-461D-8C36-F06B9A50FA84.jpeg03E080EF-3714-4484-B5C4-D56982FCE325.jpegBBFB9357-1EE3-470E-92F9-F2942BB2DE3E.jpeg131C0A8A-5899-410B-82AE-786B8804DB6E.jpeg377CF37A-0BED-44C4-8476-FF1664229433.jpeg98EFE0CC-D167-4468-944C-50E59DB6274A.jpegDE93EFBF-DA2F-44CF-B173-F569A5AC317B.jpeg0E899F78-5F69-4597-9436-C16C1D70D992.jpeg

Great looking coins! You have some very kind dirt there.

Steve

That might be the best looking LC I have seen posted. I am very happy if I can get most of a date. Yours is really well preserved. Congrats on both coins. It's inspiring to see your persistence in hunting the area paid off so well.
Thank you, Old Dude! Like I might have mentioned above this LC is an almost identical twin to the 1851 I found here several years back with my Ace 250. As far as persistence I've been hunting this same site for 18 years and this is the first 1700s coin for me!:icon_thumright:
Congrats on your first Spanish and the beautiful LC as well
Thanks, Steve in PA! Finally finding Spanish Silver for me has almost been like winning the Lottery!

Excellent finds! Your hard work is paying off. Congrats
Thanks, Scolino it has, but it's so much fun it never feels like work at all does it!

A couple of beautiful saves. Nice silver and the LC is in great shape. Congrats
Thanks a bunch, Hawks88! I can't wait to get back out there and start digging those 'iffy' signals now.

Thanks, Steve! Most of the coins here have aged well!

Well done, congrats! :icon_thumleft:

Awesome coins ,and that large cent cleaned up real nice.

:icon_thumleft: Thanks, thrifty76now! It was good to have a nice coin to work with. I avoided the hot hydrogen peroxide bath for this one, because of some perimeter pitting, and hand rubbed the remaining soil off. That, along with the natural oils from my hand, kept the coin from losing that rich brown color. I would not use this technique on non-dug collectible coins though... :icon_thumright:
