Re: my father-in-law asked me to "cash" his very small silver collection, value?

Where do you plan do "cash" it? Do you have an ebay account?

The dimes, quarters and Walking Libery halves are all 90% silver, I wouldn't take less than 20x's face value myself (melt value is around 24x's face). The 67, 68, 69 halves are 40% silver, melt value $4.91, I wouldn't take less than $4.00 each. The rest including the 1980 half are not worth much over face value with the exception of the Indian cent which is worth about a dollar unless it's in a very high grade state of condition.

I consider this assement to be accurate. I would like to add information about the 1974 dollar. If the mintmark is an "S" it could possibly be silver. In that year the SanFran mint made Uncirculated 40% Silver (Blue Ikes), Silver Proofs, and Clad Proofs. If it doesn't have a mint mark, or is a D, it is likely worth no more than $1.25. If it is a silver, or silver proof, it is worth ~$10 in silver. A clad proof... :dontknow:...I dunno

why would he want you cash 10.81 in coins? thats like a roll of half dollars and almost an arnold palmer ice tea

i double checked, you guys are right, the 74 and the 80 are clad, a guy on craigslist offered "over 300 dollars for the lot" is this reasonable?

Unless I added incorrectly, you have around $150 in coins there. Take the "over 300" before he changes his mind.

I got 170 not counting the perceived value of the buff and the indian.... Take the 300 and do it locally to avoid a scam.

RED FLAG.

Did the CL ad have more information than you've given here? Are you positive that you do not have key dates mixed in with the circulated junk?

Do with them what you wish, to each his own, but... I'd rather see them go to another collector to be added to his collection for some missing pieces rather than to a dealer that is going to melt them for silver content. Just my opinion. That's like selling a pristine antique car to some kid that wants to chop it, drop it, and paint it some wild paint color. :laughing7:
