Well folks, I finally found my virgin colonial site. It's a farm in Western Ma, next door to the one where I found the axe head cache. 200+ acres of colonial farm fields, pastures, river, and buildings. The house on the property was built in 1846, but must have had other, much older homes before. I hunted one small pasture for about 2 hours this weekend and found three coins, the newest was the 1805 Half Cent, the oldest was a 17*5 George II (not pictured, it was folded and half and I whaled it with the shovel real bad). My favorite is the 1797 Draped Bust! Every few feet I found Gilt buttons, flat buttons, pieces of clay pipes, parts or tools, horse tack, and other cool stuff. The two non-colonial period items I found were pretty cool too. The 1914 motor cycle permit, and the International Harvester Key fob were in the same pasture. I can't wait to get back to the site!

Any advice on how to get the detail to show on the coins without ruining any value?

Sounds like an awesome spot! Enjoy!

Take your time and give it a good cleaning(grids/ect.) and tell no one or you'll have a stampede on your hands.I'd camp out there in a r.v. if it was me to cut the commute time/expense too...
