Went on a lone hunt back to the Barley Stubble Field, hoping for a nice hammered. Only got 2 poor ones, which makes 13 Hammered from this field alone! (only had about 8 goes on it).

Found:
17th Century Tokens
Rose & Royal Farthing
5 Lead Tokens
Silver Thimble
Silver top to a pencil :-\
Bits...

On my last run back finishing on the tyre tracks I was covering the Left track but not the right, however I still managed to hit the edge of a find on the Right track :o Its made my Year :o :o :o Sorry I can't get a good photo, my hand was shaking. Its a stunning Gold Chip Carved Saxon Mount, with 4 hidden faces. I need some research on this one, its the first I have seen :read2:
This period is special to me & this will take pride of place as one of my all time best.

Hi Crusader!
I wonder did you use mechanical cleaning to fix the Saxon Mount or chemical, if that case, what chemical? Niiice finds indeed. :headbang:
Cotton bud & Lemon Juice at 10 minutes a time. It could be clean further by a pro, but I'm conformable with it as is.

amazing :o pretty brooch !
what a shame it has to donate to the national treasure .... :-\

No, this one is mine. It has to have 10% or more Gold to fall under the terms of the Act. This is only Gold plated bronze core with a iron back. Therefore the iron & bronze are more than 90% (IMO) of its total weight.

I'm amazed, and a little dissapointed that this find hasn't got the replys, or Banner votes it deserves :-\

Its all context I guess, to us who live & breath it we understand the significance. If it were any type of gold coin (even ancient), people generally can get it, this is a little too specialist. Its like finding the right buyer (not that I am selling), I could sell on ebay for £100 max but to the right person who gets it £500 (but there are not many of these collectors about).

lets kick their rear ends really good. :coffee2:

They already know that we strip the fields well, so we have won the mind games already.

The faces on the saxon item, they almost look alien to me.

Congrats on the great find man, love your posts.

Re: My Best Find this Year...Better Picture Added

Well done mate, I think you deserve it ,banner please

UPDATE:

If SS & I were betting it would be a stalemate. :D

At the moment the reply for a full ID was inconclusive:

'Possibly a composite disc brooch or shield mount circa 6/7th century.'

I thought it as early as 6th Century (some say Dark Ages) & as late as 8th Century, 6-7th is great, one of the hardest periods to fill any UK collection

Well so do I mate...but it seems that our over seas cousins don't really know what a very scarse find the saxon piece is :o :o :o
Proberby the same as finding a Civil War Belt Buckle or George Washington Button :notworthy: should be on the Banner :icon_thumleft:

But it takes VOTES.

And I'm still 50/50 on Saxon or Viking ;D
