I went out to a local park today to do some hunting since the weather was so nice. It has been hunted HEAVILY for the past 30+ years, so finds are often few and far between, but this park is still producing some goodies! I had my best day ever detecting today out there! Granted, it's not as good a day as many of you have had, but for me I just didn't want to leave, but my battery forced it,haha.

I started off hunting behind the big sledding hill. All I pulled out was that tiny little bullet pictured. Then I just decided to go hunt the sled hill itself for some new clad and hopefully get some state quarters. Some of the guys over at the forums on coinhunting.net and I have decided to see who can come the closest to complete the state quarter series while detecting this year. Oddly enough, I did not find ANY state quarters! But the rest of my finds were great! First I found a Kershaw 'Ken Onion' Knife in a Rainbow color laying on the ground on the hill. They go for about $30-40 on ebay right now :) The picture doesn't do it justice, it's an amazing knife! Then I pulled out my first ever silver roosevelt dime! A 1948S at about 2" deep. (I have a found a Mercury in the past, but never a Rosie.)

I pulled up some more clad, etc. and then at about 8" deep I pulled out that large token that is about the size of a half dollar. On one side it says: The Original "Boy Scouts" Shoe For Boys; and July 1910. On the other side it reads: The Excelsior Shoe; and Manufactured at the Excelsior Shoe Co. Portsmouth, O. I haven't researched it yet.... Feel free to do so if you get bored ;)

I then went around collecting a few more pennies when I got an amazing hit that screamed at me! About 7" down I found an 1890 Indian... checked the hole again... a 1925 S Wheatie... cheked it again.... a 1900 Indian. First ever Indians, first ever pre-1900s coin, first ever double indians in one hole, haha.

I took a break, put my finds in the car and came back out. I got some more clad and then out popped a nice little ring at about 6" that I haven't completed cleaned yet to check if its silver. and then the rest of the day brought me a lot of clad. $3.37 total in clad, including a 1974 Canadian Quarter, 9 quarters total, 8 dimes, a nickel, and 14 pennies. I also found that torn up dollar bill on my walk back to the car.

I will definately be checking the place out again tomorrow.

awesome finds, I still haven't found anything older than 1917 (Merc).....I would search that place till the ground runs dry!! Congrats

HH

Up until today my oldest was a 1909 wheatie at the same park. Back in the day everybody found handfuls of coins out there everyday. Now it takes some work and lots of trash digging. But today it was well worth it to dig the trash.

AWESOME job brian!! Those are excellent finds.Congrats on all of your "firsts".I was thinking that you gave up detecting for roll hunting but its obvious you didnt and you really came back strong bro.WTG!!

WTG!! You really deserve a pat on the back.

Hard work pays off. You did a great job...hunting & digging.

More HH to you. ;)

Congrats on the great finds, man what a day. :) This got me to thinking about hunting a park close to me (about a 1 mile away) it's a city ball park now. It was a migrate workers camp during the depression era to start with and then during WWII was a POW camp for German prisoners. All that is left as a reminder is a water tower and historical plate.I remember as a kid in the sixty's seeing the old barracks still standing but they are long gone now.I think it's been hunted quite a bit too but you never know what you could find. ;D

Very Very Nice!!! A day like that is what it's all about.
Wished they had sled hills here in calif. Maybe I could find one and have it shipped here. Nah, not one of my better plans. Good luck on your next trip there. WTG!!! HH

Brian,

I recognized the Excelsior Shoe Co. medal right away. I found one here in Colorado several years ago. Mine has a date of July 1910 on the obverse and a swastika on the reverse. Also on the reverse it says, "Manufactured by the Excelsior Shoe Co. Portsmouth O." I tried researching the company but came up dry.

Yours is the only other example I have seen. I would really like to know if you learn anything about the medal or the company. My guess is the medal was a promotion to entice boys to get their mothers to buy Excelsior Shoes (look at the keen medal that comes with it, Ma!).

Very nice stuff, WTG!!!
Love the little airplane,,, very cool...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

I typed in the search on google and go several good site links. Apparently there were 4 different designs and they were given away when they sold a pair of shoes.

I went back out there today and got $1.21 in clad and 2 wheats, a 1944 at about 2" and a 1918 at about 8". There is a lot left on that hill, but even more trash left to dig before I will be able to hear those nice deeper signals. Plus there are lots of old deep nails in there as well.

Just goes to show no matter how heavily a place is hunted, there are always things still to be found. Glad you got out and had such a great time. Nice finds.
