Wighthunter, that ancient is in stunningly good condition. You folks across the pond are so fortunate to have such wonderfully old targets awaiting you. Can I ask what the coin is in your avatar?

Billinoregon. Was so surprised to see that come out of the ground. Was a dream come true. The coin in my avatar is a Silver Durotriges Stater from the Iron Age 50BC. I found this a couple of years ago. In fact i have 2 now. The gold Roman was found last year. Last month i found a gold Half Sovereign from 1826. Perfect condition! Will try and post a picture.

That will probably stay in my top 5 wish list forever. You are very lucky to hold sure a rare coin! (Thessalonica mint)

Can you give some details of the type of area it was found? ie. was it a Roman fort or villa site? How many silver Denarius were found nearby?

Thanks! It was in a new field to the club with no notable settlements nearby. It was part of a very small hoard which consisted of my coin, a Gold solidus of Valentinian II, a silver siliqua of the House of Theodosius and Silver siliqua of Arcadius There was no evidence what so ever of any other Roman artifacts or coinage.

Dad & I have plotted many Roman Sites over the years & we get over 1000 Bronzes a year, I often thought that if I ever did get one it would be a random lose like yours seems to have been. If it was declared as a hoard, was it handed back after the Treasure process?

Surprisingly it was handed back. I thought I would not see it again. It's the find of a lifetime so in no rush to part with it. Sounds like you have a lot of success in finding Roman!

Yes, we kind of specialised in it, we only get about 20 Roman Silver a year, so we roughly have a 50/1 ratio of Bronze/Silver, not sure how many silver to gold would need to be found:laughing9:

I look forward to you posting in the 'todays finds' when you get out.

Hopefully out tomorrow. Nice to chat. I'm new to this site. All good!

That is stunning. congratulations. Hutch.
