Beach & Shallow Water Hunting
Left the beach today to checkout an old lake and park on the mainland. Had only been hunting a short time when I met Sarge. He has been hitting this place for quite some time. He is a Minelab fan and was using an Explorer II. He told me he has pulled large amounts of silver coins out of the location. He invited me to hunt a spot with him that has been producing numerous silver dimes. I was curious to see what the AT would do versus the Minelab. Sarge fired up his Explorer and immediately got a hit where he was standing. I swept the the spot from all sides and got a faint signal with no readout. Sarge swept the spot again minus his headphones and what a signal. Crisp, loud and clear when he announced it's another silver dime. He dug down about 12'' and pulled out a silver rosey. I have to say I was impressed, but do that again!!! He did a few more times before I left and he was holding a few silver dimes and wheaties. Depth wise there was no comparison. I had the AT on full sensitivity and wasn't picking up the signals.
Anyway it was fun to get another perspective on equipment. In the end Sarge told me he might sign up here on Tnet. Hoping to see some photos!!

I didn't say. The poster I quoted only mentioned taking a "Minelab" into the water. I have a "Minelab" made for the water, so that argument was a weak one.

Argument?..is that how you took it?..lol...The OP is comparing the Exployer II to the ATP...So I simply Asked you...is the Exployer water proof?..If its not...than what is your point? We are talking about ONE machine compared to ANOTHER Machine...Not the the ATP compared to the ANY Minelab..

The original poster was also talking about hunting land not water so you changed the parameters which changes the comparison,..

The AT Pro is a $550 metal detector....the explorer se is a $1000 detector there definately should be a noticable difference. But compare similar priced machines...Compare the ATP and the 505. There is no comparison except the price!

Wrong...I was merely stating that the ATP is not JUST a Land Machine..so there is really no comparsion...Its trying to compare a BMW With a 4WD truck....2 different beasts....2 different uses

The Whole point was so the OP doesnt feel discouraged with his machine...I was simply explaning that his machine is very capable of things that the EXP II isnt

I think alot of ppeople just like to say they own a bmw or a minelab....Id rather say "i have two AT Pros, would you like to go detecting"?..........just me.

I don't believe the OP was comparing the two over all, he was comparing the 2 for the land hunt he was doing.

I have 2 excals I can go from water 200 ft deep to land and back in. I hunted land with my excals a lot when I first got it and it went deep and I dug no iron trash unless I wanted to....

I personally prefer machine dedicated to the area I am hunting.

By the way I was not knocking the AT Pro, never owned one....

Hold up a sec. I wasn't using the word "argument" to denote a fight. Argument also has the meaning of "point of debate". I'm not knocking the ATP, I think it's a good machine. The person I was responding to, made the comment about getting a minelab wet and it not working. I was simply retorting that there are other machines besides the ATP capable of getting wet.

Yeah ....all of them, but some still work afterwards:laughing7:

Do you mean he said he might post some pictures...you said he might sign up...hes been on T NET since March. :dontknow:

Just curious, what settings are you on, STD/PRO, custom, coin, zero, sensitivity, discrimination? What coil do you have?

Was set on pro with discrim down to 20 on full sensitivity. It had the stock 8.5 x 11 coil. I changed to all metal moved around the target. I even switched frequencies and tried the standard mode.

Hey guys this was just a discussion on a very short sample. I am usually on the beach with a PI and in fact was considering going into the lake yesterday. I am not getting rid of my AT or even my PI that I might upgrade this winter. I couldn't hunt like I wanted yesterday as my left knee was screaming!!!!! One of the reasons I am on the beach most of the time. The other thing is I have not seen any Minelabs when I am on the beach. Even with many years and hours on my Whites PI I might pick up a Sand Shark only because I got to compare one on the beach. And yes I am interested in the Minelab Excal. I am open to all products MDing so I don't get hooked on a trend or drink the KoolAid.

Its funny that the atp guys would be offended tha an explorer goes deeper on silver coins. If someone post that there explorer got whipped by an atp on small gold I would think that it should. That's the reason for more than one detector.

Sign up today....looks like he's been a member since March.

Congrats on all the good finds!!

He probably forgot he had registered like I've done way too many times before. :icon_scratch: I've signed up for sites and after filling out all the fields, I get a message back saying there's already a member using that email address. Doh! :-[ Then I pop in my typical username & password and am logged right in. LOL! Really makes me feel like I'm getting old. :BangHead:

dirt-scratcher: Do you really think that the lack of a machine's ability to find the lowest of conductors is really a problem in the real-world of detecting sites/finds? I mean, let's face: you can "turn down the disc knob" on ANY machine out there today. Then go out to the nearest blighted park ..... and have NO LACK of low conductors to choose from.

Hence a machine that is said to be "better at teensy low conductors" (hence said to be "better at gold"), is two-edged statement. Because any site where a person can go chasing earing studs and tinsel thin chains ....... then heck, he may as well be using a beach pulse machine. Because sites like that are invariably the beach, not the normal land sites (parks, schools, relics, etc...) for coins that we all hunt.

View attachment 869488View attachment 869489View attachment 869490 The first picture is what ive found over the last couple of months at the spot I met NJcigarman. The second 2 pics are what Ive found the last few days. I found the franklin and 3 silver dimes today. I use the explorer se pro on max sensitivity 32, gain at 8,limits all at 10 and deep setting. The se pro has a 11 inch dd coil. Most of these coins were 10 to 12 inches down migt have been deeper. Thanks for looking and good to meet njcigarman.
Holy silvers! Those seated quarters and Morgans just got my heart pumping... Wow, you have done REALLY well at that spot... makes you wonder how many coins are stil there in the 12-18 inch deep range! I wonder that at a lot of my spots...

Cigarman - make sure that you dig those faint repeatable tones with your AT Pro even when there is no readout... It is still giving you good information there. The other day I dug an Indian head at 11-12" - repeatable high tone, super quiet, no readout...

Oh Damn!..I get those faint signals with no readouts and just assume its small pieces of Iron or something..>Nice to know that it might be something good!..thanks for mentioning that
