Sometimes you can find older shop vacs at yard sales that are made out of metal and have metal lids. Much stronger than the plastic ones sold today.

Yeah maybe, but high impact plastic doesn't get smashed and dented up like metal will. The big underground mines have all gone to using plastic poly pipe over the steel Victaulic pipe for the miles of air water lines needed throughout the mine. It's a great improvement in durability over steel pipe. Plus the cost and installation of it is so much better. All good I guess unless there's a fire.
