My 2nd "Dandy Button" for the Year......Cleaned up w/Pic's.....

After all the rain yesterday I had to get out, went to the "Box Plate" site with Ty this morning.A few piece's of lead and some "whatsit's" later this thing pop's out....read's a solid +78/84 on the MXT,couldn't believe it was a Dandy....at first I thought it was a Copper until I turned it over.I guess I need some earlier map's now

It has some nice green patina on it but it also has a pretty good layer of "crud" too....any help on the clean-up would be appreciated.

Re: My 2nd "Dandy Button" for the Year...Advice on cleaning this one!!

Nice dandy button. I've found a few myself. All of them are pretty nice including a nice octagonal example I found last year. If the button is copper, which the green patina would suggest that it is, and it doesn't appear to have any corrossion on it, I would try the hot peroxide method followed by a distilled water soak. It has worked well with many buttons I've found in the past. Good luck.

I went ahead and used the Peroxide Bath....I knew I was going to lose some of the Patina but it's still a little wet from the bath. It's starting to dry out and some is still there.Look's kinda "floral" to me.This was the only way to go,ground has alot of iron it.....10 yd.'s from the RR Track.Thank's for looking and Thank's for the Comment's

You lost corrosion, not patina.

Great button, I have found 30 buttons this year all pre civil war but none with any nice designs like yours except the Virginia state seal one but I still love digging them. The buttons might be older than the civil war era but I believe they still used them during it because I found my 1850s Virginia button along with several pewter and flat buttons with no backmarks which should be 50 years older.

Nice work on the cleaning!

I don't find enough large 1700s flatties without backmarks to use peroxide on, but it worked!

Anything that has a backmark, toothpick first to read it--then if you want (and if it's a flat button with no gilding), peroxide...

This one turned out great.
