Went out today with Twistidd and Watercolor out in the woods again. We bumped around to a few places then decided to go back over to where Twistidd found his 2 Barber dimes last week. This is what I found, an 1867 (no rays) Shield Nickel!!! This is my 2nd oldest coin that I found!!! This coin still has the edge around the rim and all of the high relief details on it but the ground wasn't kind to it, but I am super happy that I found it, heck I haven't even found a V-Nickel yet this year! I also found a 1919 & 1946d Wheaties.

The new pix arn't in the best focuse but thats the best I could get it while taking a pix like 2 inches from the camera. Its clearly an 1867!!!! :tongue3:

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

It was only down maybe 4 inches, I thought it was gonna be a shotgun shell or a buffalo!!!! :tongue3:

4in, wow! You have good soil at that site (good for detecting), doesn't sink too quick. HH

Very Nice !

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

Excellent find! Barber Hill has been good to us. Next time let's focus on that area even more, no targets will escape our pillage!

So that little area alone has given up: three sharp Barber dimes, two mercs, a sheild nickel, I don't know how many wheats...there's a seated somewhere there, it's only a matter of time until one of us gets it. Somehow, I have a feeling you will grab it! Nice job with the really old coins lately! Sorry I had to leave early, you know how it is sometimes! Oh well.

Joe

The more I look at the coin, the more impressed I am at its condition. Of course, it looks like it's got corraline algae growing on it (lol), but behind that, it's fairly crisp. Gives me a lot of hope.

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

I don't think I've ever seen you so excited :D

That Shield is awesome!! Maybe some day I'll find one as well :) Now I at least know they're still out there

Great hunt!

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

Dang! Nice score on that nickel TF! The date in the pic looks like 1881 to me, which would be a $250 coin at G-4.

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

Nah its def an 186 and the only one it could be is an 7. I looked at it thru my big magnafine glass.

Re: My 1st Shield Nickel - 1867!!!!!

Nice find bud!
You're definitely on your way to seated the way you're going.

Great video Kermit!

I think we may have to change the name from Barber Hill to Shield Hill in honor of your awesome Shield find

LOL - I keep thinking how I dropped my detector and just started yelling & running trying to find you!!! :tongue3: :tongue3: :tongue3: Good thing you weren't too far away as I might of lost my detector... ;D

Those woods are so big, I bet that place has a lot more old camp sites just waiting for someone to detect them!!! Its gonna take some serious scouting but it will be worth it!!! :icon_pirat:

Way to go Fiend!
Yeah they sound like junk, that's why so many folks haven't found 'em! Even at 4" deep, you thought it was shotgun brass!

Bet you'll be digging more shotgun brass! And I hope you get more of these goodies too!

nice old nickel to bad the ground is so cruel . great video too!

First, Large cent, and now a shield...You're on a roll. big time congrats.

Big congrats on your first shield nickel Kermit! Great video too, I sure love seeing those. I also thought it was an 1881 in the uncleaned picture, but in the cleaned picture it's clearly a 18x7, and pretty much looks like a 67 to me. Here's what an AU one looks like :)

I think I remember someone cleaning these up before, with steel wool or something? They have some plating, but do you think the corrosion has eaten past the plating, or can they still be saved?
