White's MXT, Garrett Ace 150, Etrac
Well, on my 2nd full week with the new MXT (upgraded from Ace 150)...still not feeling entirely comfortable or confident with this thing yet! :( I feel like I need to dig almost everything, just in case so I don't miss something good!! Coin's seem pretty solid, have dug a couple of small trinket charms but no great finds. In trying to make sure I don't get discouraged, I've gone back through my finding "records" from the 150 and guess what? It took over a month before I started finding anything worthwhile with it. Seems like someone told me patience, practice, patience, practice...
We have permission to hit an old farmhouse and school house, but I don't want to do it until I feel confident! Good luck all ;D

Relax and take your time. Remember this hobby is first supposed to be fun. You will get the hang of it very soon as each detector out there takes a bit of practice. :hello:

Good Luck, Sandman

Hang in there, when I started out with mine I was told to hunt in Relic mode and dig all the high tones........it drove me nuts, but I got used to it and now thats all I hunt in and understand everything she is telling me,that is a great machine!!!!!!

AMEN TO THAT. ;D

I am glad i found this thread.

I have an ace 250, and I want to upgrade to the WHITES MXT.

Can you give me some comparison maybe? what was it like going from the ace to the mxt?

I wanna make sure i make the right choice, 800 bucks is alot of money for me... the ace250 was an economical entry level machine which has now shown me its limitations and I need an upgrade.

Thanks!

Hey Gene,
All in all I've found it quite different then the 150 for sure. Machine right off the bat just feels more substantial (imagine that). Without a doubt I am finding items deeper, I'm covering the same territory I hit with my 150 and still getting items in the same areas.
I like the ability to have a better shot at what really I might be digging, although I am still digging quite a few pull tabs that "act" like nickels. Starting to get the hang of that one though.
It is lots of money no doubt, I read all the posts I could find and reviews before deciding on the MXT. Part of it for me is the learning curve...I need something fairly simple. ;D I like the fact that it is pretty versatile, although I mainly am just looking for coins.
To me, it is an easy machine to swing even though it is heavier than the 150...balanced good at least for me.
Hope this helps a little! :D

I have had my MXT for about the same amount of time also. I' just picked up a copy of Jeff Fosters "The MXT Edge". It has some good info in it, but don't expect it to make you pro over night. Larry recommended it to me and it has made me a lot more confident in my use and setup. Which helps a lot. I been swing a detector since 1969 but used the same old detector for 25 years and you get kinda used to in that amount of time. So I decided to up grade to the newer technology, so I need the book to get up to speed faster.

I've been quite happy with that book also, great resource for sure!! :read2:

Jimmy don't feel bad. I bought my MXT 01/11/2005 and I have used it for the 3rd time today, the 2nd time yesterday,
yesterday way better then today
I hit a park right behind my house and within 20 mins I hit a zippo lighter, a storm drain, a large sewer pipe that lead to the storm drain, I thought I hit the big time, another 20 mins later I hit a Bud Wiser can then 2 then 3, I could have started a recycling center in this park, but the later part of the stay at the park is when I hit my first .25 quarter, well my 2nd I actually found one in my front yard that I didn't put there, then I started to hit dimes, this thing loves dimes I have found in 2 days 8 dimes, I also hit a few pennies too, but no nickels. I'm just learning this thing so I know its going to take some time with me, My wife and I drove all over BFE today scouting out places to looking. she is 8.5 months pregnant and I also thought women had food cravings but this one wants to go MD instead, like all the time now since she found my MXT in a box about a week ago. go figure

You guys have probably saw my post about what I think of the MXT. I have had mine only about 2 months now(maybe). I believe it to be one of the better machines available and very easy to learn. You just really have to get out there and use it. I do know that you should dig screwcap signals that are 4 inches and deeper because they have turned out to be indian head pennies or very old wheat pennies. I felt right at home with it on my very first time out. If you have used analog machines in the past then you should be able to pick the MXT right up and go to town with it. I do dig every good signal and again it is not always something good but the machine is doing its job by telling me that this is a good tone and the target ID icon is not bouncing around from one end to the other(unless it is a pretty deep target). Some people may not agree with me but I had an Ace 250 also and it is what it is and that is, an entry level machine. I liked it but it was designed for an entry level detectorist and I got one because it was suggested to me by a dealer. Some people can only afford that much and it will get them by because it is a good little detector, others swear it is the best thing since sliced bread(I am not one of them)...............but once you have moved up from an entry level unit it is hard to go back to them..........The MXT was not designed to be complicated to learn...........it is just as easy to use as an entry level unit because it is a turn on and go detector but, its performance is hands down kicka$$.................I think this is my most favorite machine I have ever used and if it goes bad it will get repaired or I will get another one for sure, Tim

What he said its an awesome detector for sure.

I have been using mine 7 years now. If I could find a machine I enjoy using more I would get it and I have tried a bunch. It can be a little chatterbox at first but it does not take long to get it purring like a kitten. Quick easy adjustments on the fly with knobs instead of scrolling menus are hugh for me. If you do get it, make sure you get the MXT EDGE as it will speed up the learning curve big time. Get it, learn it, it's a bad a__ machine! :icon_thumleft:

the mxt is a great machine
just keep it running smooth go slow and listen for the whispers for those really deep targets

I've experienced the same thing....and ever since been diggin up just about everything until I get a better understanding of what she's telling me. I've only had my mxt since around the beginning of summer.

I now have a few more days under my belt with the MXT and as I’m still learning what to listen for, I for sure am hitting targets, when the VDI says .10 ninety percent of the time its on the mark, only a few times it turn out to be a penny, when it says .01 cents its always on the mark, .25 cents have been on the mark, but the nickels on the other hand have been a hit or miss, The VDI on a nickel at 20 is almost a for sure thing and anything above that to 24 has been but I have also hit it when it has said 18 and then again dug on a 18 and a 20 and found it not to be, I still hit a lot of foil and still digging it all, but the faint beeps are the ones that I have to really listen for now, I went back to a park today that I hit 2 days ago and in the same places I still hit clad I just moved a bit slower today then I did last time, that telling me either I was moving to fast or I just wasn’t pay attention to my MXT, I’m going back again tomorrow to see if I have missed anything else which I’m sure I did,
The rings and gold I’m still having a hard time finding as I know there are there, I’m just going to have keep hitting it and move slow and listen to everything, I’m going to have to invest in a different pin pointer soon the one I got does not work well at all, but my wife and I are having a great time and that is what is important for us

Yea just take your time.........It is a great machine and it will do you some good.........It really shines around old home places if you happen to get to look around one............I dig all good repeatable signals and have not found any gold yet but I will keep on trying.....Good luck in your jewelery search as I know there is some around there too........I have found a silver ring with mine.............Have you found any silver jewelry yet norcalrockhunter ?

Yes I found a silver ring earlier in the week and it was stamped 925
then this morning I found another ring, it was a mood ring, its silver in color but no markings
then this after noon I hit another ring it was on the VDI was 42 to 47 .25 cent, and it is a silver ring stamped 925
and then I hit another silver pendent stamped STER,
I still havent hit a gold piece yet but its a matter of time, I did turn down my threshold a bit, and it made a big differance, When I hit a target and am unsure I'll flip the toggle swicth forward and hit it again, if its soild it I'm diggin it,
I'm going to go out tomorrow and though the weekend unless the wife pop's this baby out Due date is Sat!!!

Great let us know all about your finds and congrats on being a new father too!!! Tim
