Hi all, I was out over the summer in an area that has Revolutionary War history. I set aside this piece thinking that it must be a concrete drill. I got bored and looked at it closer under the loop and discovered that it is made of what appears to be some sort of copper like material. I scraped a tiny spot on the tang. I am wondering if this could be a black powder cleaning jag. Has anyone ever found anything like this? I did find some pewter items suggesting the proper age. Thank you for any thoughts on this.

Pete that sure does fit the bill! Brass material would make perfect sense as would the screw threads. Just to let you know the diameter is about the same as a 3/8" bolt. You have done some really nice research on this. I'm not very good at that kind of research.
It was one of them post that was driving me crazy,as I knew there was a answer for it just took some time to dawn on me. :tard:
Best to Ya,
Pete, :hello:
Good site to see others................

What doesn't make sense to me is the concave area that I marked in your photo. And in the bottom of it there are groves that I marked with the dots. It makes me think it was made that way because the groves in it seam to match the curve? It seams like it should engage a gear or something, and at the point of the concave area it would allow free movement one way or another on the shaft? And the opposing thread would only be as wide as the grove to engage or disengage at this point?
well it's something to think about. HH :icon_thumright:

It may have been more like the butterfly type. And the fact that the butterfly teeth fit in the grooves there was nowhere else for the thing to break either had to be gear teeth or the threads of the brass shaft & I think we no which one broke.Just my theory.

There is what appears to be some sort of break on that tang near where the tang connects to the rest of the piece. In your note you think the tang is iron, actually it is the same brass/copper material. That is the spot that I scratched away in one of my pictures to show the color. You guys are very informative with your research. I like the idea of some type of 'worm' gear also but that groove just does not seem to make any sense unless it was to lean against a shaft and then move out when the screw was engaged??
