Mucky's lucky day..(more ways than one)

Started out today with my normal routine, cup of coffee then off to my location. However, in a half stooper, I noticed and odd jingle in my pocket change...a 1964 silver quarter!

So thinking this will be my lucky day, I was walking deep into the woods to my cellar pit, all of a sudden I hear that tell tale rattle then hear a plink, its a rattle snake! It hit my shovel!! Since I have a concealed carry permit and when digging in the more remote areas I always carry, I double tapped the snake with my .45..

* Note, I do not advocate the killing of any animal (except ISIS) except in a life or death situation or hunting purposes..

So after I had my wtf moment, I hit my location that I have been working recently, next to nothing...spot went dry..so I did a little prospecting, knowing that there is a bottle dump on the other side of the carriage road, I decided to take a gamble..The only bottle I managed was this little opium bottle..everything else was just frags..

Something inside told me to keep digging....bang! a flat button!

Then a part of a buckle..

Then I unearthed what looked to be scrap metal, then I noticed a design, although schwacked, its still a pretty cool piece..

On top of these items, I have a 5 gallon bucket full of iron that I am cleaning now, will post more pics when cleaned..

Hey Muck, timber rattlers are a protected species here not to be killed for ANY reason at all!! I run across them quite often in Ramapo and Harriman, leave the things alone!! That's some bad karma you just earned I'm sorry to say.

You can have some of ours. What address would you like me to send some to? :tongue3:

I am fully aware of the protected status of eastern timber rattles. However, the situation that was presented, there was no other option, it was either get tagged since it was coiled to strike again or fall 25ft to rock scrabble. If i got hit It would be a 2.5 mile regress to my vehicle, with an elevated heart rate due to the steep incline and unforgivable terrain. Given that, If did get hit with the above listed situation and since the eastern timber rattlers propensity to deliver copious amounts of venom (hemorrhagic-protolytic) it would be slim to none that I would survive, since the two area hospitals do not carry anti-venom and the nearest hospital that does is 35 miles away.
I spend a lot of time in the local mountains and I run a crossed them quite often and all the time I do run across them, they vacate the area. Like I said in the disclaimer, I prefer not to kill an animal unless it was a life or death situation or I was hunting.
I had no other choice..

Gene if I would have gotten tagged in the ramapo's/Harriman I would have had a spitting chance. However, not to give my position away, I was somewhere near, in, around Bearfort mountain and the waywayanda plateau. In which there is absolutely no cell service.

See a few and NEVER bother them. In a cornered situation to prevent a rattle snake bite, I would drop the hammer and not look back. Might not have posted it though ha ha. Congrats on the finds my friend. HH

Yeah I guess your right. ..lol it is a family site I don't want to give the impression that I am a blood thirsty murder. .after all a .45 vs snake?

Sometimes were put in situations that force us to do things we'd rather not. At least you made it clear that it was a last resort and you're not bragging about it. It's just a freak thing that happened. I love animals, all animals. Hell I won't even kill a spider but if it's potentially life or death you do what ya gotta do.
You've got an interesting spot there. Cool finds. It's all about the adventure my friend. Good luck on your next outing

Thanks bud, your lucky to be living in Maine, no poisonous snakes. .but you do have moose during the rut with the sex drive of a 14 year old boy in a women's locker room..scary in its own right.

I am stumped on what the last item is with all the inlays...

I would have simply reacted by hitting it with a shovel and being a protected species would have crossed my mind after the fact. I believe in "let live and leave alone", but it sounds like the snake was way to close for that

Are you sure the site went dry? Maybe you couldn't hear any signals after letting off a couple from that cannon? :-P

Given that the soil is extremely full of iron, no machine was present. Just my Gerber 30-00007 my sifting screen and a 5 gallon bucket.

If it's a me or him situation, and I am packing ANY type of weapon, I'll do whatever it takes to come out on top. With regard to bad karma, I say phooey to that.
If you were dead from a rattle snake bite now that I would consider bad karma.

I totally agree, however given the circumstances it was split second decision, react or be attacked.
Let alone worry about the constant pack of coyote's watching me, coy-dog's, bears and bobcats..it come with the territory, leaving habitation completely behind, what else could one expect?

good finds MB.I don't like to kill stuff like that ether, but stuff happens sometimes.Glad it didn't get ya.I would have kept the rattle!

nice shot; taste like chicken!

bearfort/wayway--in me backyard, eh?

...you ever get a coil for your machine?

Thanks bud, tapped him once in the mid section and the kill shot behind the head. I did get that coil, however with the wifey moaning and complaining, the soil in the desirable spots being harder than concrete, fishing tournament tuneups and the tournament's themselves, I haven't had a chance to put it to use. Plus, this sifting bug really hit me, it gives me perspective by digging up stuff that I normally would've passed by. .yea I was in your backyard digging the many hot locations near and around Margaret King's house..she is my New Ms. Robinson. .lol
