Most Likely U.S. Gold Coin To Find

Answer to part one is according to the Red Book the 1881 Half Eagle. According to detecting sources the chances of finding a single drop is less than finding a cache with several. On viewing threads (during a one year period) here the half eagle single drop is found most often.

Answer to part two: The gold coin most likely to be found hunting a old site today is in my view, still the half eagle. Due to it reads in about where an indian head cent does. If you find a full eagle or a double eagle most likely you are the first to swing a coil there. Smaller gold coins are notched out by many.

Zeb, several years ago I examined the articles published in various treasure hunting magazines regarding the incidence of LOST FROM CIRCULATION gold coins. Over 90% were Half Eagles, i.e. $5.00 gold pieces. Hope this helps; HH Jim

Thanks, Jim.

I've posted on another site and I got this same answer there.

It's the $5 gold piece, that's for sure.

I just purchased one off ebay. It's a 1886 S Liberty in about XF condition. I paid about $25 too much for it but I just wanted to get one and get it over. I plan to use it in my coin garden. I'll protect it but I plan to burry in flat, on edge, etc. I'm going to learn the sound and meter reading until I know it perfectly.
