I decided to hit an old schoolyard I have worked (and many others have worked) many times. Here in NC, this is the first morning of sunshine we've had this week. We've had to deal with about 6 to 8 inches of rain due to the remnants of the recent tropical storm. I had always read that you can get a better signal when the ground is wet, so I thought I'd test this theory out by going to a place I'd been many times before, in search of deeper coins. Well, I had just turned on my DFX, and the first signal I hit read around 83 VDI, but showed a depth of about 6 to 7 inches. I first dug a plug about 5 inches deep. Used the bullseye, and pinpointed it in the bottom of the hole. About 2 more inches down, out popped this 1956 Washington silver quarter!! MY FIRST SILVER QUARTER! I was so excited! After double checking the hole, I moved on. I continued my line for about 50 feet, digging a few good signals. One turned out to be a led tube of toothpaste (very old). I turned around and headed back toward the direction of the silver quarter find. I had just passed this hole when I had a VDI of 92 sream at me! I really wasn't that excited, because I've had hot rocks, and even some large iron give a "false" spike in the 90s, but I dug anyway. The DFX said it was about 5 inches down. Again, I dug about 4 inches of dirt away, pinpointed the signal with the bullseye, and gave it another scoop. The edge of something silver was revealed, and I said to myself, "PLEASE let this be what I think it is!" Sure enough, out popped this 1882 Morgan Silver Dollar!!!! I was so excited, I just had to walk back to my car for a few minutes for this to sink in! Of course, I headed back after catching my breath and meticulously searched an area about 20 feet square to see if there were any other hits. None to be found. With the sun quickly creating a steamy hot morning, and with the sweat already beginning to get past the comfort zone, I decided to call it a morning. 1 hour of detecting, first hole silver quarter (my first), and a wonderful silver dollar (definitely a first).......my best day ever! (Working from the coins / jewelry program, preamp 3, sweep speed 14, recovery speed 17, AC 69, DC 39. Now, I will NEVER believe an area has been completely hunted out!

Very Nice Find, but you had better go back and recheck the hole you found that dollar in. By the look of the stain on the back of the Silver Dollar, there is another coin in that hole. HH...Jesse.

Also it looks like another coin was sitting on that morgan.

JerDFX is right!!! Go back and check your Morgan hole!!

That is an amazing find and an old schoolyard!! I bet you're still looking at it!!

Congrats,

That's always a heart-pumper-upper. I've only dug one, and I still stare at like it was found yesterday. Way to go!

Hi guys, and thanks for the warm welcome to the forum. Sorry I forgot to mention....as I cleaned the coin further (with soap and water only), the circle seemed to almost have a gummy feel to it. I began wondering if the coin had a sticker on it at one point, or if it may have just been against some type of rubber object that may have caused the residue over the years. Truth is, I guess I'll never know. If it was a sticker, one theory may be that a kid brought it to school many years later to show friends and lost it. I lean toward it being some other object in the ground that caused the residue. After all, who would have a coin like that in a collection and have a sticker stuck directly to it??
I had the detector set to Best Data as opposed to Correlate. By the way, just got back from a local park this morning. This is a relatively new park (20 years or so old). I take the kids about once a month to play there, and usually sweep the detector for an hour or so to see if anyone lost jewelry, etc. I found one ring that I thought might be silver....gave a VDI of around 68....but just turned out to be alloy metal with a possible silver plate. (Got about $2.00 in clad as well). It amazes me that in one month, the playground replentishes itself to the tune of $1.50 to $3.00 in clad. People really do lose stuff all the time! Again, thhanks to all for the warm welcome!

Nice it's always a treat to find a silver dollar and a Morgan is even better.

I feel pretty strongly that the wet ground helped. I had swept over this spot a couple of times. Although it is possible I completely missed both of these before, it just isn't likely that I missed the quarter and the dollar. Heck, the dollar almost magically pulled my coil over to it!! Who knows, with coins continuously rising and falling in the ground due to freezes and heavy rains, these coins could have been out of reach last year! Thanks!

I love the morgan. I have dug two myself. The very first one I dug had a glue residue on the back and I believe it was atached to a buckle or something. Looking at how deep your quarter was compared to the dollar, maybe yours was also glued to a buckle or something and was lost in the 50's or so. Any which way, well done and ATA-BOY on the two firsts!!! 8)

Beautiful coin. I'd love to find one of those myself. congrats.

Excellent finds friend. Go back there and see if there is a seated or a barber quarter in that hole. GJ!

Yes, I checked the whole several times when I found the Morgan. I even checked it again a day later just to be sure. There was nothing else in the hole. Whatever caused the circle on the back must have been long gone. I appreciate the other good theory of it possibly being from a belt buckle. Yet another possibility!

Thanks so much for the encouragement......Went back to the schoolyard yesterday.......same area where the Morgan popped up.....struck silver again!!!! See my 9-18-08 post for more details!!
