There are 26 recognized VAMs or varieties of the 1878-CC Morgan. You absolutely cannot make a determination of authenticity based on position of the mintmark alone.

Also, one of the main "giveaways" to look for on modern Chinese counterfeits is the font. It is easy to copy but very hard to perfect. The serifs and points that make up the ends of letters are almost never correct on modern counterfeits. The OP's coin appears to have crisp fonts with correct serifs.

Another common "giveaway" is roughness or lack of smoothness in the fields. They are often marred with irregular spots or extra lumps of random metal. I do not see that on the OP's coin.

You've probably already tried this. But with less valuable coins, I just drop them on a solid table. Silver makes a fairly distinct sound. Just about all of the silver I've found in change from stores, I knew it was silver as soon as it hit the other coins in my hand. Of course, this would be the LEAST scientific method listed, but its helped me a few times. Mostly with foreign coins.

I see what you guys are saying...The links cw0909 and hutindog posted show the cc in different spots...

HMMMMMM....I might have some real coins I thought were fake!! Now that would be awesome!!! :laughing7: I better check some again!!

no....I'm going with my original thought and signs of fake....I started second guessing....

Hope it's real for the op's sake!! I hope they get it checked and get back to us....

I'm no coin expert, but that silver-plated brass look screams fake to me. Especially since the brass comes out mostly on the highest relief points on the coin. Those would be the first areas to show wear, even under normal conditions.
