duh...duh... DFX
Without giving up TOO much information (and thus leading to my contact getting lots of phone calls and being bothered, something he expressed hesitation in when granting me permission) I have located a great new area to hunt, albeit one that's 2+ hours away.
This area is a Methodist Camp-Meeting ground that has been active since the early 1800s. I was able to secure the go-ahead to hunt there anytime I please. The area was supposedly hunted heavily in the 80's, but we all know no area is ever hunted out (but MAN I can imagine what was found back then!)
The day began with Bob and Nate arriving at my house at 7:30am and after coffee and bagels sandwiches we were off. Several hours later we arrived and were introduced to the groundskeeper who lives year round on site. He took us to the history building where we saw many photos dating back to the early days of photography showing hundreds of horse and buggies sitting where my Honda Element was parked! He then went outside and pointed out some of the other features including a wooded hillside where the elders used to go and pray.
We then suited up and each wandered off in our own direction as the camp area is close to 30 acres and includes many cottages, most dating back around 1900.
Wheaties appeared first (my real goal was a large cent ;D) and the after a while I pulled a 42 Merc. Bob then hit a Merc himself and then a silver Rosie. Wheats were fairly plentiful as well as modern clad and do-dads (some prety old looking) but the very-old coins remained elusive for the first few hours.
As I started working between the cottages in the narrow lanes I hit a banging dime target. From only 3" or so I saw the seated liberty looking back from the bottom of the hole! This is only my second seated coin, a 1877CC dime (also my first CC minted coin!)
As I troted out to show Nate and Bob, Bob was walking towards us with a smile on HIS face. I shouted out that I had found a Seated Dime and he smiled and pulled an IH cent from his pocket...SWEET!!
Nothing more silver-wise for me but a few more thingamabobs...
Right as we were about to leave and investigate a stagecoach stop/tavern site the groundskeeper said was a few miles away, Nate strolls up the way Nate does and pulls a Walker from his pocket!...now everyone had silver and Nate's first silver of 2007 is a half!. Some of my wheats were old ones...1919D, 1913, 1920.
Stopped at Robert Evans for dinner on the way home and each went into their restroom to carefully wash our silver off and look at them closer.
Hope you enjoyed the recollection and these pictures!

BTW, as it has caused certain TNet member to question the validity of the Seated Dime Let me explain that the picture of the dime in the hole was taken more than 10 minutes after the coin was pulled from the hole. The dirt still stuck to the coin had plenty of time to dry. In fact, after trotting over to show Nate and Bob the coin, I even stopped at my car for some hot coffee before returning to the hole. Before I filled the hole and continued hunting I put the dime in the hole for the picture because I LIKE closeups of coins with fresh dirt as the background. I think it makes for a great contrast and a good picture. Nowhere did I ever state that the picture was taken before the coin was removed from the hole.
To those that scrutinize people's posts to this level looking for fakers I say this: If you ever have doubts about someone's honesty I suggest discussing it in private through PMs or emails, not posting a public accusation.

It appears to me that all 3 of you in the photos are smiling. Can you explain?
:D :D

Nat

I don't like the tone of your question Nat!!

But ok...I'll defend my honor and explain:

I was happy just to be out hunting in January in Ohio and hence my smile.

Mirage was happy because I drove.

Nate was happy because even with his DFX in the shop, his Whites Classic was still able to find that silver Walker.

There. Now don't you feel stoopid for asking such a rude question? ;D ;D

Great finds!

All I know is that you guys look cold! Boy, I'm glad I'm in Florida ;D

Rod

Man does that place look like it's loaded with potential! Good luck on future hunts!

Awsome hunt and a great looking site guys. I'm sure you'll be hitting that site again real soon. :)

I'll be back there Feb 3rd in fact!! And this time I am doing two things:

-picking two strips between the oldest cottages and stripping them of ALL targets in an attempt to unmask deeper targets.
-going to my big coil and gridding an area that used to be the horse and buggy parking area.

I may also spend more time wandering the woods around the camp. All three of my older wheats were found next to big rock outcroppings in the woods. Since there were few trash targets back in the woods the big coil should work fine there too, getting more depth.

Way to go, thanks for posting the pictures

MAN that is CRAZY...that picture was taken literally 5 minutes after we first started in the morning and I had already pulled a wheatie...and that big hunk of silver was just 4 ft away???
I gotta admit that Nate was right though...that area had a LOT of ferrous in the ground it I was bombarded with tones.

I think you just didn't pass your coil over it, missing it by a close margin...it was close to your plugs. The targets/iron/junk wasn't TOO bad in that particular area, not like over by the seated dime. Anyway, here's a couple more pics of my stuff.

Nate-I tried to research that Excelsior 6 lever lock you found and it seems that that style of push-key lock was first used around 1860 (Yale made first one and it was copied by Eagle and Excelsior)
Here's a link to an Ebay auction of one like your that shows how it unlocked straight up. The key would be just pushed in to unlock, not turned. They were used mainly to lock large trunks.

Interesting on the lock. It's encouraging to see an 1800s era relic turn up. Still, I hope the DFX arrives in time for the next hunt there, but I doubt it will...there are some things about the site that make using the Cl. 3 a challenge, but in other ways it has its benefits.

Very nice, You guys have deffinately found the right location! Hope you find more when You go back. J.

The Three Amigo's....Congrat's on the 77' Danimal...Awesome.Getting more and more into the old house's for coin's,something I didn't do before....But it's a new year....Great job guy's,Can't wait for the next time out....Good Luck!!

ABSOLUTELY awesome post! A near identical site is sooooo close to my home but for years (perhaps forever), access has been denied.....ah, maybe one day....thanks to this post, I will never give up on it.

Did I miss something...one reply to this thread mentioned "scratching my head" and "dirt question" and "maybe that guy would care to explain it"?

Was someone questioning frozen soil in your location?

Jamie

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent...That place will keep you guys busy for a long time. Will be awaiting pics/posts of those finds. Happy Hunting!! ;D

Jamie,
Keep trying on getting permission for that site near you. Ask more than one person. It wasn't until I talked to the RIGHT board member did things start to open up.

Coincidence that you ask about the soil comments and you also hunt with kindafoundabuckle? Or should I say wrongcolordirtonthecoin? ::)

Please accept my public apology for my shady reply. Since recently meeting kindafoundabuckle and hearing his view, I wanted to form my own opinion. It was difficult to do since the dirt color difference posts were deleted. Now that I've heard both sides, my own conclusions are the same as the explanation that I received in a PM from Danimal. For what it's worth, I shared my opinion with kindafoundabuckle before receiving the most recent PM from Danimal. I see nothing questionable.

Please don't let my reply get in the way of continued sharing of your site and finds. This post is one of the best to come along in a while and I have enjoyed reading it. The pictures are very good too.

Looking for forgiveness....

Jamie

It's all good Jamie. Like I said, those type of comments, whether they be direct accusations or snide comments, should be tendered through PMs or email. They certainly don't belong out in the public.

That was better than reading it in a magazine! You and your buds hit a good one there. Keep hunting it every chance you get, no telling what all is there. I've yet to find a seated, but it's out there somewhere. You give me hope!

HH,
