This is no junk you found at this site. You should go back ASAP and see what else is there.
It's an early site and from what you've found looks very promising. Keep us updated with
anything else you find there.

I found one of the little shield things. I believe it is horse tack. There's a thread somewhere back. About this one.
Brian
The shield-shaped things are called Harness Bosses.
Check out my reply #12 in the link below:

Yes, the heel plates are correctly identified. Now, lemme look at these other goodies...
Ok. I think the acorn things are musket parts too. I'm looking for them now. These are FAR from "junk" finds--in fact they're pretty darned Great finds!

Buckleboy I do agree with you, but over here Harness bosses are called a Horse Brass, what's in a name. I guess a Saddle boss would be somewhat smaller too. The Sexfoils from Crusader appear to be smaller and lighter to used on a persons belt, not on a thick belt or piece of leather on a horse, where something heavier like this would be used.

The Sexfoils are older time frame than anything we find here. But over here, these pieces mentioned in my link above are called Harness Bosses. "Horse Brass" could mean anything to me--from Saddle Bosses to Bridle Buckles to Bridle Buckle Shields to Martingales. See? :-\ Same thing with the term "Horse Furniture." It's so generic...it makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!

P.S.--Thanks, diva. :) I'm enjoying the leaves here so much. I'll be enjoying them more when they get some of my "target" fields cut so that I can view the panorama from the center of a giant bean field with the '66 on my arm. ;D

Sure do understand Buckels, maybe they have more names for that kind of stuff in England too, hope someone here from England will comment....
I don't understand anything about stuff on horses anyway, gads what are they large animals!

It's a NO go as far as going back to site.New owners.Even offered to share or give them all the finds,
tried to explain that they might want to show case, and display a little history from their new property.
Said they have no intrest in the history, and wanted no one on their land!!! :stop:Some people just don't get it :icon_scratch:But I did hunt it many times in the past,so I do have a collection from there. Also found wreath side of buckle(SC or VA.) there.Good while it lasted. :icon_sunny:Going today to beg permission from property
owners next door.Maybe I will take some home made fudge this time as a peace offering!!!

Link is good, but those are all NEW horse harness stuff. To look at some older horse stuff look at this link:
http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/H/harnessmounts.htm
Scroll down and you will see the stuff.

I was surprised at Colchester that they did not call anything a Horse Brass. That is what the farmers we talked to called them...
But there are more names than I though:

harness pendant
harness decoration horse brass
Harness hanger
harness mount
harness shield decoration
harness cross mount
harness decoration hanger
harness heraldic shield pendant
harness hanging pendant

Yea, some people are weird about giving permission, and others say SURE go right ahead where ever you want! We are all different. Pity though for you...Hope the neighbors will help...

It is a shame but I think many property owners may be worried about being sued. Too many lawyers advertising nowadays. I had to stop letting people pick my extra fruit because they started climbing my tree. I didnt care about the kids cutting through my yard on the way to school until one little one got hurt climbing over my fence.

My advice is to keep it quiet about where it is and WHAT it is--and wait the owners out. When they die, leave, or sell--approach the new owner.

Also, do the research to figure out Why all those nice relics are there. Then ask permission to hunt adjoining properties. This site may be bigger than you think.

Yes bigc that could very well be true, had not thought about that. We don't have any problems with that here in Holland, and I don't really think they have the problems in England, have searched there many times and never heard a farmer or someone say that. Here no one sues anyone (maybe yet) at least I never do hear about it. I know that BioProfessor had taken out extra liability insurance so that he could show that and an agreement when asked for it, but some places still turned him down, were still afraid of being sued. Pity that every thing there is run by lawyers there, and everyone wants to sue...

Good advice on the adjoining properties! There was some action there for sure...more than one musket at least...

Everyone is sue happy here in Miami. Lawyers offices practically on every block lol. I dont know about everywhere else. Lawyers advertise heavily on daytime television giving people ideas and many people view that as a way to get ahead. Lawyers love to take the case if the insurance coverage is there. They love to sue insurance companies, raising premiums for everyone. Many doctors are moving away because of the high cost of malpractice insurance. It is sad IMO. A bit off topic sorry.

Sorry you can't get back to the site. Good luck with the neighbors.
You need to research this site some more. The trigger guard you found is most likely
pre Civil War. These are common designs for Fowler Flintlock rifles. Also with the Buttplate
and heel plate your onto something there. Good luck!
