More Fun for the "Whatzit" Gang

Been cleaning a bunch of my smaller finds from last Sunday - all these items come from an area where there was a town back in the early to mid 1800s. The first pic is just for size reference - the 2nd and 3rd are of an item that Joe dug. I would think it was a part of a belt or pack of some sort - that is leather sandwiched between the rivets. In the third pic, you can just make out a definite mark of some kind (possibly a makers/manufacturers mark?). The 5th photo is obviously the base of a shotgun shell. My question is any idea of the age on this? I've never heard of this "brand" before.
I'll be posting two more items to possibly be identified. I didn't feel like writing a novel and using a whole post/page for all the items. Any help with these would be gratefully appreciated... 8)

Re: More Fun for the "Whatzit" Gang

The leather with rivet looking things go to button type suspenders. And the thing with points sticking out is a rope cleat. Probably to a flag pole. And last is the end of a 20 gauge shotgun shell.

Thanks for the reply Goodguy. That piece in the 4th and 5th pics is only about 3/4 of an inch - a bit small for a rope cleat... ;D

I don't think that's a rope cleat... how big is it? It looks like a leather tack that has fold-over holder thingies...

Its so corroded makes id difficult. I will allow it is too small for a rope cleat.

Reminds me of a knob to an old cast iron mechanical door bell that you turned to make it ring.

Last item with the dog ears looks like it once had threads on it. May be some kind of cap to fill with oil or kerosenes, etc. Monty

Re: More Fun for the "Whatzit" Gang

the piece in pics 4+5 looks like a bifurcated rivet.often used in the making of cardboard or fibreboard cartons like they used to use in old hardware stores for storing nuts and bolts and other small loose items.yours is a used example and the carton section has rotted away.dont know how to post links but just google bifurcated rivet for images.BTW the name comes from the fact they have 2 "legs"

The item in pics 4 & 5 may be a button from furniture upholstery.

Here's some modern examples

It does look like the kind of rivet where you bend the bottom. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...?q=%22bifurcated+rivet%22&um=1&hl=en&lr=&sa=N

I love it when we are given a ball of rust and asked to ID it. :D

I removed the "ball of rust" - I hope that makes life a little easier now.

The piece I'm most curious about is the leather with the two copper rivets. There is a definitive mark on the the one to the left. Curious to know if it's a brand of the past owner or manufacturer. As for the reason I took the tack off - many have just looked at the item and not the first pic with the pieces against a scale for size reference. Yes it is rusted badly - I cannot afford to just put together an electrolysis tank - I just clean them the best I can and try to find out whatever info is out there. I'm all for sarcasm and joking around, but when I post something in this section it's because I'm looking for help with whatever it is I post. I do value the help here greatly - sometimes it feels like ideas are just being "thrown out there" to see who can post first. My apologies for the bluntness - second day not smoking and I'm ready to split in half... 8)
