These are from my Uncles estate. He was born in 1906, and when he graduated from high school he got a surveying job and was involved with surveying the Alaska coast line. I don't know the time line of his jobs, but at one point was working for the power company surveying lakes in the high Sierra Nevada for dams to store water for power production. This was in Amador County for the most part, perhaps also in Alpine and Calavaras county also. Anyhow they were in the Centeral Sierra for at least that one summer, and he told me he found these points along side the trail on their way from camp to work, and I got the impression they were mostly from the same site.
#1 through 6 are all obsidian. #6 in clear with just a little black inclusions and is one of my favorite points, and I didn't find it, but love it. Numbers 7,8,9, and 11 are not obsidian, and 10 is either a knife for small work, or a small scrapper, that's probably basalt. In the mid 1930's my Uncle joined the Marines as a pilot, and flew a bi-wing Boeing fighter, off the USS Langley, the very first aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. When I was 16 we went out near Morro Bay, California, to a mound he knew about that didn't have the sooty soil, just lots of shell and artifacts. That location is gone now, covered with houses, but at the time he taught me more about spotting points from a distance, and what to look for, showing me points that I'd walked over, which is why I find points when I'm doing something else and not even looking. A person gets an eye for spotting parts, look for the cups where the flakes came off the point, or edge, the tip of the point or a notch that's showing. If you think you see something, pick it up or at least expose it with a stick. Lots of times it's nothing, but it beats missing a good point. My favorite point, found in Amador County, Calif. Translucent obsidian, the center of the display.
