Don,
Thanks for your help.
You are also providing links to websites that are very helpful.

I also have 6-7 coins from Morocco from the 1800's.
Can you also help with those?
If so, I'll try to get some pics taken and posted soon.

Have a Great Weekend!

Scott

Scott,
Sure, post the Morocco pics and I'll do my best to ID. I'll also continue to ID the other ooins; most of which are maravedis. If you don't mind me asking, how did you get old Spanish and Moroccan coins?

Don,
I had bought a good sized lot of coins years ago and had put them in my safe and forgot about them until I was in College 5-6 years ago. My Anthropology Professor helped Identify several but many remained unidentified.

I appreciate your help.

Best,

Scott

Some history (as noted by others on the Net):
The four maravedis were counterstamped to eight, simply to increase their values. During this period, Spain was engaged in expensive and prolonged wars (the 30-Years War) and was practically bankrupt, in spite of Peruvian silver. Its soldiers were paid in maravedis so taking in maravedis and restamping them to twice their previous face value was an effective (but unpopular) way of halving the cost of its armies and paying small debtors. Counterstamping to raise the nominal value of the coin could only be done with copper and billon coins as Spanish silver was the international money of the day and could not be treated in such a cavalier fashion.
Don.......
