More Dug Tonight-- Colonial Era? Massachusetts property

Hi everyone!

John just texted me some new photos from this evening's metal detecting. He wanted to test out his new pointer, and boy did it deliver. We are very interested in figuring out what these things are! Especially cool is the Shield button/broach. We keep finding large, crude pewter or silver spoons. Perhaps the troop that may have camped along the stream on the property had mess kits? I would say you're in and around the colonial era...

Forgive me if I'm too forward, but can I see the back of that spoon I ask because I want to see if it's stamped or from a mold.

Ddf...is there a way we can tell? A few weeks ago, we found an even crude big spoon---looked like the spoon part had been soldered or hammered onto the handle. I'll ask John to text me photos and will upload them tomorrow. Any idea about age? Maybe I'll Google for Revolutionary War soldier's mess kits...if there was such a thing. Lisa

You have a Colonial period lead seal, what is probably a horse brass item, and the triangle thing a belt or strap tip, maybe also horse/harness related. Good finds, but par for the course there... nothing too significant.

I find it very significant - I live to find stuff like that up here - its all good signs youre in the right area
don't know what youre using for machines or if you are hunting in all metal to get maximum depth - or how fast you swing
but you slow down and use max sensitivity you can and I see you finding smaller silver(1/2 reales) and smaller buttons too there
save this link in your favorites - may help you down the road with some of your colonial spoons IDs
being from Ma. ive found many pieces of the types of spoons that are in this book - bowl pieces with markings and handle pieces that are
identifiable - I have found one complete trefid spoon - that is one of my prize relics - I believe the larger one you just found may be late 1600s early 1700s
looks like most of the buttons you found are from the 1700s - keep it up

Agreed, the Lead Seal is most likely a Cloth Seal.

BTJ2...the pic to the right shows some cracking, or chipping, indicative of pewter, or lead as IP states...as much as I would like that to be a hammered silver coin, I doubt it, especially with the additional input of the other members. But keep on digging! There's most likely much more in the ground than you have recovered. Ddf

Looks like an earlier spoon on the bottom...Joey is a smart guy so I'll agree with his assessment of age.
