PARADIP: About 50 ancient silver coins and over 3,000 ‘cowries’ sealed in four earthen pots were unearthed by some workers engaged in soil digging work recently in Marichipur village under Balikuda block.
The workers stumbled upon the silver coins and ‘cowries’ in the field of one Bhamarbar Nayak when they were digging earth to lay the foundation of a house. Historian Bijaya Mohanty of Kendrapara said as per the Treasure Trove Act, 1878, when such treasure has been buried for a long time -- over a century -- the land owner cannot make any claim and the property is treated as bona vacantia and will vest with the state. Mohanty urged the district administration to cordon off the areas as many curious villagers have their eyes on the land and have started digging the earth to find more silver coins.
The officials of State Archaeological Department (SAD) and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have also been informed, said Mohanty.
