I took 1/2 day off work today to go detect at the 1830's CW house again. Hey, somebody's got to do it. ;) I had a great day, and finally got the monkey off my back with my silver drought. My last silver was about a month ago (8 reale piece). I worked the yard area today close to the house. I went VERY slowly across the front yard and scored some decent coins. Decent for me anyways. ;D
I found the Merc about 6" deep under a broken piece of brick. I then dug a wheat, and then an IH.
I had no idea what years they were until I got home. The IH is an 1868, which I believe is a key date!!! It is also my oldest coin ever, besides the 8 reale spanish silver piece.
Yaba-daba-doo!!! ;D I also dug a small gold ring. Looks pretty old too.
I also found some pretty cool relics and hopefully can get a few ID's.
All in all, a fantastic December day in the mid-80's. :o
My finds today were:

*Key date 1868 IH

*1943 Merc - ain't she purdy? ;)

*A 1919 Wheat.

*A cool Victorian looking piece with a lady on it.
Any idea what this could be, and/or the age?

*Two oval pins - The large one mat be brass.

*A gold ring with the letter "B" on it. It looks very old. Nothing stamped inside.

*An ornate keyhole piece, play token, old rusty pocket watch.

*A bullet piece that I am hoping is CW era. Hopefully one of you experts can tell me what it is.
I can make out some letters "ngton" at the end of one of the words on the bottom. See closeup.
Any idea?

Thanks for looking Folks.

P.S. Still no Barbers for me this year yet. :'(

Key Dates for IH's by my view are 1864 (Bronze) with L, 1877, 1908-S and 1909-S. I'd call a semi-key IH any date having a mintage lower than 15,000,000 but that's just me. Others may define it differently.
That's funny too that the only 1870's IH you found is 1874. That's the only date I've found from the 1870's as well. Coincidence???

Doug, you are on a roll!!! I always look at your posts first because I know you're going to pull something Intresting out of the ground. Congrats!!!!!!!! How about leaving a few trinkets for me to find, better yet just rebury some of your good finds, point me in the direction so I can see what it feels like to be a bone dry pro.

Nice Indian Head cent! 1868!! WOOHOO!

My oldest dug coins are 1868 ~ I've got two ~ 1868 $10 gold coin and 1868 Half Dime.

AWESOME!!!

That medal/charm on photo # 6 is beautiful. What a keeper. Congrats on a very successful hunt!

You hit Gold and Sliver, what a great day and those are indeed splendid finds. You my friend are the digging machine :). You have to be in order to find Gold and Silver ;).

Keep finding the good stuff and may the next year bring you much Gold and Silver, along with plenty CW relics.

HH and GL.

WTG MM ...Nice finds ! The gold -B- ring is killer !!

The monkey really freaked me out !!!!! :-[ LOL

Great finds Doug. I was fortunate enough to find an 1868 IH as well this year. Not as fortunate as you though. Look at the condition mine is in.

Jeff,
No problem. I'll go throw some wheat pennies for you out in the field. ;D I talked to an old guy across the street from this house, and he said the place (or at least the land next to this property) has been detected by many over the years. He said they used to find bullets by the bucket full !!! Man, I wish I was into detecting back then. :'( He found a large cannon ball in the creek too some years ago. Every time I go over there, I find something, so there are a lot of things to be found still. I haven't even hit the woods yet. Stay in touch next week.

Kirk,
I couldn't resist putting that monkey up. ;D Maybe I should make that my new avatar? ;)
When I was detecting this last trip, I started out in the field again, but it got too hot. Yes, I said HOT.
So I said to myself "there has to be more old coins in that yard around the house." Since I pulled two IH's from there on previous hunts, plus numerous relics, I knew the yard hadn't been detected to death. I worked it VERY slowly this time at a 90 degree angle from my other attempts. Sure enough, there were some more coins to be had. I was hoping for an older Merc or Barber, but the 1868 IH made my day. The small gold ring was up front too. I'll return that on my next trip. Great folks that own the place.
I'm going to try a new place (100 yr old house) on Saturday. Hopefully it will be a successful hunt. I'm trying to find the grandmothers three lost rings (1 wedding band & two class rings) and some earrings for her.
Wish me luck.
The monkey is staying at home! ;D

It really does Nat. It is such a neat old place, and right in the middle of the CW battle. I love the relics that keep popping up. ;D

OC,
I'm willing to trade my IH for either of your 1868 coins. ;)

Thanks Ricardo.
I really like that piece too. I wish I knew what it was. Where's Gypsy at? She's great with IDing these old pieces. ;D
When I first dug it up I couldn't tell what the design was. I was thinking maybe a military eagle piece since I found it close to the CW sword belt plate. Then I realized I had it upside-down. :P This piece is a real beauty.

I think my finds are due to 90% machine and 10% operator skill. Or was it the other way around? ??? ;D ::)
I do love finding gold though. ;)

Thanks Ev. I actually wish mine looked better, but what can I expect after the coins been in the ground for 140 years, right. :o ;D

Thanks Civil. Right now I'm killing time until deer season ends (Jan 1st) until I venture out into the woods. ;D It's safer around the house. ;) I would love to score a cannon ball some day. This battle took place within a very small radius, so that should help my odds a bit. A lot of the area is city owned now though. :'( The property I hunt is private property.
It's been a lot of fun MDing this historic spot. The 1830's house still has the original tin roof on it! :o

That is a great hunt! Any Indians are fun, but 1878 and older are funner.

Yours has lots less crud encrustation than my '67. I started with the olive oil, so I've got to stay with that.

Great coins and great relics, too. I like the keyhole thing, oh yes, a gold ring is noteworthy, hm?..

I didn't read every word of the replies, someone may have pointed this out already. The center-fire Remington shell casing is probably (but definitely not definitely) a 20th-century smokeless powder round. If it's a necked-down brass case, gets narrower toward the bullet end, probably modern. If it's a straight case, possibly black powder. When you can see the caliber marking, it'll be easier to tell.

Did I mention Great Hunt?

Thank you Admiral.
I'm pretty sure it was a straight case. It was so brittle it crumbled from me handling it. What you see is all that is left.
I'll try to see if I can make out and other letters or numbers on the head stamp.

Admiral,
I cleaned it up a bit. It says "Remington Express" and all I could make out on the caliber was a number "0".
Probably a more modern piece?
