I took 1/2 day off work today to go detect at the 1830's CW house again. Hey, somebody's got to do it. ;) I had a great day, and finally got the monkey off my back with my silver drought. My last silver was about a month ago (8 reale piece). I worked the yard area today close to the house. I went VERY slowly across the front yard and scored some decent coins. Decent for me anyways. ;D
I found the Merc about 6" deep under a broken piece of brick. I then dug a wheat, and then an IH.
I had no idea what years they were until I got home. The IH is an 1868, which I believe is a key date!!! It is also my oldest coin ever, besides the 8 reale spanish silver piece.
Yaba-daba-doo!!! ;D I also dug a small gold ring. Looks pretty old too.
I also found some pretty cool relics and hopefully can get a few ID's.
All in all, a fantastic December day in the mid-80's. :o
My finds today were:

*Key date 1868 IH

*1943 Merc - ain't she purdy? ;)

*A 1919 Wheat.

*A cool Victorian looking piece with a lady on it.
Any idea what this could be, and/or the age?

*Two oval pins - The large one mat be brass.

*A gold ring with the letter "B" on it. It looks very old. Nothing stamped inside.

*An ornate keyhole piece, play token, old rusty pocket watch.

*A bullet piece that I am hoping is CW era. Hopefully one of you experts can tell me what it is.
I can make out some letters "ngton" at the end of one of the words on the bottom. See closeup.
Any idea?

Thanks for looking Folks.

P.S. Still no Barbers for me this year yet. :'(

Jorge,
My Tesoro only has the two settings. I usually set the discrim at "tabs" and the depth at 10 (sometimes max). I don't hunt in all metal mode, or I'd be digging up crap all day long on these old farm spots. Theall metal switch doescome in very handy though when I need to scan the plug I dig.
The back yard of this place has tons of signals, so I'm sure there are a lot of relics to be had, and hopefully a few coins too. I found the copper piece with the Victorian lady on it very close to the CW sword belt plate I found on Saturday.

I'm going to see if the owners of the house want it or know who's it was. Hopefully they remember it.

Very good job you did WTG.I like the ring.

Hey Doug,

Congrats on finding your oldest American coin and for finally getting the monkey off your back. I love Indian Heads too...I dug 42 (22 from Iowa) this year...I want more!!!

That gold ring looks so familiar to me....I found one just like it in Iowa, except it had the letter "L" on it. Nice!!

I think that site is going to be producing for you well into the new year.

Congrats on all your finds. My new United States Coin book for 2007 rates the 1868 in G-4 condition at
$45. Try not to clean this coin. The value will go way down. Just leave it alone, put it in a folder maybe and keep it.

Again, Congrats, Love the Lady Broach and old Ring. Looks like a site I'd go back to, turn my detector
to all metal and dig all the iffy signals, you might be surprised at what you find.

Congrats on all those great finds MM
You have got that UMax smokin again.

Nice IH MM!!!

That's a nice one. 1868's a "semi-key" date. I've managed an 1868 and an 1866 a few days apart my first year with an Explorer. For all of the IH's I've found, only one has been from the 1870's though...weird.

Congrats on the great finds!!!

Thanks Dan. I'm headed to a new spot on Saturday if I don't get rained out. I'm dying to find my 1st Barber like everyone else finds, so I can get that out of the way. TN makes them look so common, but I haven't found one yet. Maybe I need to head up North? ;D

Ringfinder,
Thanks for the updated price issue. That's a big increase over my 2003 version coin book. Great news!

Thanks Sgt.
What would qualify as a "key" date for in IH besides a 1877? I found a 1874 IH before, but the value wasn't as high as this 1868 in the coin book.
