Money clip or something else?

Dug this in a Civil War camp deep in the ground and @ first I thought it may have been a money clip but I just do not know... Only thing it says on it is Pat appofor?

let me throw a question out there hut, the loop on your chain there looks to me that 1 side opens if you squeeze it , does It ?
maybe that will help on the ID , because if it does open then its made to go into a item that has a hole , like a o-ring on a pocket watch .
