Hi, I'm a grandmother, called Mom Mom by my grandchildren,
from Va. Beach, Va. and have taken up the hobby of metal detecting. I have always wanted to try it but never seemed to do it, but now I'm hooked!!! I am of course learning as I experiment and I'm sure that I'm not even close to what all the rest of you younger MD are doing but I can promise you that I don't let my age stop me. My Husband says I'm obsessed. I started a year and a half ago with a Garrett 250, then my husband bought me the Garrett AT Pro, which I love, for this Christmas he bought me the Garrett GSI 2500 which I am really trying to learn how to use. I get very confused about all the settings on all of the MD. I read and the instructions and think "Ok I'm ready" then I go out and forget how to use the different settings. (maybe my age) My biggest problem is reading and watching the youtube videos and seeing all the great things that are found, all I have found are trash (a lot of it) and a lot of coins (nothing old) I just don't know where to go except school yards, and the beach ( I never find anything at the beach) I would love to try a civil war battle field and maybe just find one bullet or something from the civil war, would be a dream come true. This weekend my husband and I are going on a short trip to Fredericksburg Va., and all around the little towns, like Culpeper, Va. Of course I don't know of anyplace that would allow me to Metal Detect so guess I won't be able to. If anyone knows of a place that I wouldn't get arrested (I read all the warnings and I don't want to go to jail for a hobby) please share with me. I look forward to reading more of everyone's successes, it does keep me inspired to continue.

Welcome aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: Virginia for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

True Love! :laughing7: Maybe you guys can do research together.

Welcome aboard!

Welcome, your never to old to learn just keep it up you know what they say practice makes perfect. You have to find the junk before you get the treasure HH

Welcome from Alabama and happy hunting to you. Stay Patient and then share your cool finds.

Welcome, and be patient. The old coins will come. May your dreams come true in that while on your trip you find a civil war bullet. Can't help you out on places to hunt, but good luck.

Thank you to all that sent me replies. I am excited about the possibility of finding something that has to do with the past. I always get so excited when my detector finds something and I start to dig just not knowing what I will discover. I think the older we get the more we appreciate our past and the brave people that lived before us, so holding a piece of the past can in some way connect us no matter how many years ago that person lived. My grandchildren actually don't learn a lot about the past so I try to interest them whenever I can. I live in Va. Beach, Va. and I recently found out that a high-in furniture store was used as a POW (for the German prisoners). So in researching this I was amazed that I didn't even know this and I grew up not far from this area. A lot of History and some great places to detect but can't get permission. You can detect the ocean front but so many detectors that are very professional that I have only found cans, pop tops, sinkers, and some coins nothing of any value (YET) I love reading what others are finding it really helps to motivate me!!

Thank you, I look forward to all the posts in hopes they will assist me on my journey.

Just keep at it, I enjoy hunting around sports fields you will find a lot of modern coins and jewelry around those. If you grew up around the area see if any families you knew growing up are still around and maybe you can hunt on the property they live on, Networking with older friends can get you areas to hunt.Good luck on all your future hunts.

Well Mom, I know it's a long way; if you are ever in Minnesota let me know. I'm pretty sure we could find some old bullets from 1862. I know of the camp site where the Union Soldiers stayed while preparing for the battle against the Sioux Indians (Dakota). I've only hit it once as it's about 3 - 4 hours from me, though it seemed to be virgin territory as far as detecting goes. I found some good stuff and only hit a very small area of the field.

Don't give up, one day you'll hit something good!

If you go to Minnesota I suggest you wait till after winter...lol

Welcome to TN...

Welcome to the new improved TNet. Just keep experimenting with that detector. You are already finding stuff so you're doing good. When you go to those places try just asking a cop about parks, fields, a good place to hunt and have at it. And remember, you could be sitting at home babysitting or at a nursing home waiting to gum dinner. You'll find that a lot of people here are older than you...
