Hello folks!I have found bullet molds before, but this one (half)I found last weekend is kind of different? The bullet shape is a little different.I seen a .42 Lemat bullet posted which is a very rare bullet but it looks an awful lot like what I have here?Any ideas....I wish I had a Lemat for comparison

Looks like a Hanovarian. It's fairly rare. It's a foreign bullet. They came in different calibers and as far as I know are mainly confederate. I can't remember where they are from maybe Austria I don't know of any other bullets that have that shape though

Thanks "V",this came from the site that the French 1850 coin and the pre 1800 8 Reale came from.

You're welcome
I got my bullet book out and checked and I still think it's a Hanovarian but I need to make a correction on my first reply and say there are some other bullets with the nose shaped like that. They are all foriegn though. The Hanovarians were used in a war over seas. Maybe the Crimean war but I can't remember and some of them dug from the Crimean war sites have made their way over here and are being sold as civil war bullets.

I looked and what they have listed for a Lemat doesn't look anything like the mold you dug. McKee's & Mason's bullet book is about the best book you will find on civil war projectiles but does have some mistakes. Not that they didn't know what they were doing just that new things have come to light since they wrote the book and we have found that some of the Id's are wrong. One good example is the double end Whitworth. They figured it was a Whitworth because it was .45 caliber. Later ( I think in the late '90's) some one found out the bullets actually went to a gun called a Vandenburg which fired some outragous amount of bullets at one time. I think it was about 120. Sort of like a big shot gun

From what I can tell the Hanovarian looks the most correct.

Give that mold a little electrolysis and it may help on the ID. How many rings are in the mold?

Ummm ... I'm not exactly sure how to break this to you, and correct me if I'm wrong, but if the Volcanic bullet you're referring to is the one pictured below, I pulled it off the site that Silver Searcher posted and not the one I did. I wasn't sure what the heck a "Volcanic" bullet was (and I'm still not sure), and I went back to look for it, but couldn't find it listed. But when I went to SS's site, there it was! And even though I agree that both sites are informative, in this particular case I'd say the kudos go to Silver Searcher, and not me. Besides, he has a much cooler sounding name than I do anyway!

So here's to you Silver Searcher! :notworthy:

But thanks anyway, kuger. I was feeling kind of important there for a minute!

SODA - "GRAY SKATEBOARDER" - BOB

P.S. The Volcanic shown here shows a value of $50.00.

I think I'm going to change my name to "Jeez-Louise."

No Bob,it was your link,Bull run Relics, the first one on the bullet page.Check into them quite an interesting deal, they were basically hollow and as said self propelled. The site Silver posted was a huge help in that it showed a picture of what Vayaknak i.d. ed it as a Hanovarian

Like I said ... call me stupid, but the first one on the page I'm looking at is a "Three Ring Sharp Shooter." ??? What am I missing. ??? Are you accessing the site from your desk top, or from the link I posted above. Maybe something has changed, but that doesn't make sense. Either that or else I have a full page apology coming trying to explain that I'm really not an idiot despite how it looks! :tongue3:

About the volcanics. They did have a self contained charge. The had a small zinc washer in the base to hld the charge in. They are fairly rare. $50 is about right for them. You don't find them often but if you dig one there are usually more in that spot. About the Bull Run relics site. I've know Johnny for years. He had a shop in Manassas. He is a very knowledgable dealer and an honest person as well.
