Been collecting Hobo's for 40+ years and this is the first time that I heard of a Hobo nickel almost always featured a pic of a hobo with a beard and a hat.

All types of characters appeared on carved coinage and at times the opposite side of a Buffalo nickel, the buf was transformed into another animal...and more commonly as a hound's head.

Some coins, the surface features are totally filed off and script lettering is carved to make what is now classified as a 'Love Token'...

OK, let me rephrase my post...from the limited sample of one "boho nickel" site, all of the classic boho nickels I saw there that were attributed to certain artists (with and without real names) with actual hobos on the front of the buffalo nickel all seemed to feature hobos (based on the indian head) with beards (often scraggly) AND a hat. I didn't see any there without a hat. That being said, if any modified nickel is considered to be a hobo nickel then we have a pretty broad definition of what a hobo nickel is. I saw the one above with an owl on it, which to me is not a true hobo nickel in the classic sense as it's just an image carved on a nickel where the artist made no use of the original features of the coin. Love tokens are coins that have been sanded flat on one side and a new image applied. If modern hobo nickels can fetch up to $20 a pop, I might start sanding down a few bag fulls of nickels and start making my own hobo nickels for eBay :) LOL
